When it's 70% of the same leads shoved onto visual media decade after decade, yeah, I undersand you.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it depends on the story. If a show is about a white family and everyone is white, then whatever. But if we're in the middle of downtown new york and everyone is white, then I notice.

But b99 is a fantastic show and I love how diverse it is because it proves you can have a cast that works well together and is full of all different people.

Can't really object to that. Not sure whether anyone really could.

Give it about three hours/when we get more comments. Someone here will object.

B99 is a nice balance. Although I feel like a SJW for wishing the female characters actually interacted positively. But at least they feel like real women. And I love the diversity.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean by "interacted positively?" Because I actually think one of the selling points of B99 is that the women are as funny as the men, a lot of comedies make women the "straight man" and make them entirely too nice and boring.

For me it has no impact on my enjoyment one way or another. Apparently this is really weird.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm interested in things for the underlying story - race or gender of the characters doesn't matter to me at all. I can't get into something if I don't care about the story.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you'd sound like a raving SJW if you declared shows without non-white and female protagonists were complete garbage and so is anyone who likes them. You just sound like someone who prefers a little variety.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm as anti-SJW as any progressive, but I love me a nice diverse cast. It just doesn't send me into frothing rage if one isn't present.

Nah, this is a reasonable thing to want and I see nothing wrong with your attitude. (Or taste!)

I also don't care when people enjoy shows with all white or mostly male casts (I have!), but variety (and representation) is always nice.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, the diverse cast doesn't hide the fact that it's a pretty mediocre show. I got tired of it quite fast.

Nah I understand that, variety is nice and while it's not 100% of my decision-making process when deciding to watch a show something like a more diverse cast could tip me over into watching it when I might have not bothered.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think character diversity adds another layer.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
For the show? Definitely. In the eyes of fandom? That depends. I'm almost tempted to start watching this show because at least around here I see more enthusiasm toward more members of the (diverse) cast. I've watched other shows with diverse casts, and the fandom attention to supporting characters regardless of diversity has left me cold.

I prefer variety and in all likelihood won't bother with a TV show that is lacking.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell who's who! I am just so used to shows that I can't fallow the the show because all the actors are indistinguishable. this is so much better.

Yeah, this is one thing I really appreciate about shows with diverse casts. When you just have a bunch of generically attractive white guys with the same hairstyle, it takes me ages before I can tell any of the characters apart :P

I'm really bad at facial recognition, so more diverse looking casts are a plus in visual media, making it much easier to follow.

Diversity usually is a plus regardless of other factors. Like I can like a thing if it's all white dudes but if it's diverse I'm going to like it more.

Er, actually now that I think about it, I'm not sure I'd like a canon that's all white dudes. I guess there are some things that come close (MCU, discounting SHIELD, is mostly a sausagefest) but in general it bores me if it's all male. Hm. :|a

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, a raging SJW would be someone going around telling other people that they're not allowed to enjoy anything that doesn't measure up to your standards of diversity, and that everyone who does is a terrible human being contributing to the erasure of [insert minority group here]. What you're describing is just a personal preference. That's fine (and perfectly understandable).

Also, it annoys me when more "diverse" franchises, even if the level of diversity is just plain realistic for the setting, or for mirroring the real life, are the ones questioned for why they're "deviating from the norm", or accused of being "SJW bait" or whatever. When really what should be questioned is why so much media lacks this diverstity in the first place.

Random personal preference side note thing: In theory, I'm much more interested in narratives with multiple female characters in notable roles. However, I also tend to like the types of genres and narratives that happen to have mostly-male casts and male protagonists much more often than not... so in practice, most of my main fandoms have male protagonists and not that many female characters.
It's kind of frustrating sometimes. No, creators, I don't want some stereotypical "girl stuff" the way you understand it, I want this same kind of stuff I already like, but with more girls. And diversity in general.

Me too.
