For those few asking why this bothers me, most of these fics:

Rely heavily on stereotypes and things found in media of Jews (things like OH YAY CHANUKAH THAT'S IMPORTANT RIGHT. No, it's more of a filler. Some sources date it becoming the way it's viewed today around the time of the second world war, some even earlier. It's still minor.)

also, like said, they use it to add on suffering. Nothing else. There's no actual depth to the usage, no research, and no mention, typically, when he gets to the current time period. It contrasts to the many fics out there regarding Steve and his faith and adjusting to the time period, so it's even more annoying. There's been a LOT of change in the religion and what's been going on since the 40s in one sect alone (Reform). As I don't belong to the others, I can't say what happened there.

I'm surprised people didn't understand why this would be bothersome tbh. I've actually seen quite a few people add minority status to characters in a way that either comes across as really fetishistic or as a ploy to gain sjw brownie points. (Or, if they aren't adding it, they're emphasizing it in a way the canon doesn't.)

And MCU fandom is especially rife with this, between intersex fantasy!Indian slave!Loki fic, Hawkeye 'deafness is super hawt' fic, crippling-PTSD!Tony and Steve, and all the rest.

And I can easily see fandom using the Holocaust for added angst, while forgetting that the genocide created drastic differences between religion and culture before and after the fact.

and also that it's, you know, the goddamn Holocaust

I see this stuff annoyingly often in other fandoms. Especially the Chanuka thing, ugh. I love Chanuka, but it is not NEARLY as meaningful as... almost all other holidays.

It also always annoys me when Jews are written how basically all tenets of faith and all the mitzvahs tend to be erased, because hey, it's awkward. No shit it's awkward, that's what Judaism's about! While it's true that different streams within Judaism have chosen different things to keep/emphasize/etc., the people writing this stuff typically never inquire about what might be important to a Jew in that situation.

(I once saw a fic where they had the Jewish character do some sexy scarification of Hebrew letters. It was so gross to me.)
