Totally agree. I feel that way when people tag fic as having "POC" or "POC character," as well.

Every time I see that I get the impression the writer is showing off how progressive and brave they are. 'I'm so speshul, I wrote a fic with black people in it! Yay me!'

That is my back button/red flag. It automatically makes me assume whatever is inside that fic is insufferable, and that the writer must love the smell of their own farts. Just shove your non-white/non-Protestant character in the fic and be done with it. Don't wave flags around going, "LOOK HOW AMAZING AND INCLUSIVE I AM LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME".

People randomly making a character Jewish because for some weird reason, they fetishize Jews.

I agree and disagree.

I think it really matters how it's handled in the story. For example, if Bucky being Jewish MATTERS -- such as his response to atrocities in WWII or how Hydra treats him or perhaps how he and Steve might have faced discrimination together (Steve for his size/health and Bucky for his religion) then I think that's okay.

But when someone just says "Bucky is Jewish!" as though they expect a pat on the back for being so open-minded, then yeah, that's annoying as fuck.

I think it would "count" if the writer did research into how American Jews reacted to WWII and what Jewish soldiers experienced on the frontlines as well as how they dealt with encountering Nazis. That's actually something that history isn't great at showing -- Jews are so often depicted as victims of the Holocaust (understandably) that the stories of Jewish soldiers tend to be overshadowed.

even overlooking everything else... "not keeping kosher" why is that a tag? is that some major plot point of your story? is kosher the only thing you know about jewish people? *face palm*

For those few asking why this bothers me, most of these fics:

Rely heavily on stereotypes and things found in media of Jews (things like OH YAY CHANUKAH THAT'S IMPORTANT RIGHT. No, it's more of a filler. Some sources date it becoming the way it's viewed today around the time of the second world war, some even earlier. It's still minor.)

also, like said, they use it to add on suffering. Nothing else. There's no actual depth to the usage, no research, and no mention, typically, when he gets to the current time period. It contrasts to the many fics out there regarding Steve and his faith and adjusting to the time period, so it's even more annoying. There's been a LOT of change in the religion and what's been going on since the 40s in one sect alone (Reform). As I don't belong to the others, I can't say what happened there.

S2? I think I’d actually be interested if someone explored the vast changes between the time periods, especially of the Reform movement, and of a shift in pronunciations of Hebrew.

Eh, the only person I follow who likes fic where Bucky is Jewish is Jewish herself and her fic is good.

(I have a bad habit of filling in comic details in absence of movie details, so my movie Bucky is WASPy as hell and an army brat. Somehow. But I don't really care if/when people don't agree. Except docks. Fucking *docks*.)

So I'm down with Jewish Bucky, but all that stuff ya'll are talking about upstream sounds pretty obnoxious.
