Re: Vegetarianism

yeah, I don't really understand why anyone would be surprised by it. I spent a lot of time on my grandparent's farm, and I saw chickens eat other chickens (ones who had died for some reason or another) on several occasions. some of my cousins also thought it was amusing to feed them mcnuggets and they never hesitated to eat it. they don't really give a shit

AYRT

We had chickens that ate their own eggs once. *facepalm* Chickens are stupid.

That's not actually stupid. It's a sign that the chickens are lacking needed protein in their diet.

Huh. The moar you know. Or the moar my parents didn't know LOL. They were hobby farmers who sucked at their hobby.

If they're still raising chickens, might I recommend The Chicken Health Handbook? There are physical copies available for sale if they don't do ebooks.

Out of curiosity, do you/a family member raise chickens? My sister has four so I'm always just like "CHICKENS :D".

I used to. At one point I was responsible for dozens of chickens. They're definitely my favorite farm animal. I'm sure they can be mean, but in my experience they're not worse than any other animal, and they have nothing on pigs. Plus, how can someone look at this:

and not fall in love?

When my turtle lays eggs, if I don't get to them soon enough, she starts to eat them.

I saw a farm chicken attack a cat once, pulled out one of the cat's eyes too. Really made a mess of it. The cat was going nuts trying to kill the chicken, then trying to get away from it, but the chicken was too quick and too aggressive. It really made a mess of the cat's face and it's back legs. Chickens might look stupid, but they can fuck you up if they get it into their minds to do it. It wasn't even a rooster, just a regular layer.

They can definitely be brutal, yes. My sister got attacked by a hen when she was a kid (iirc, she wandered too closely to its chicks. not even super closely, just in the vicinity) and her legs got pecked up pretty good. She's still kind of afraid of chickens

Did your sister get a sex change and then move to Pasadena to study physics?

Took me a minute too, I thought it was just more of the weird random insults.

I think they're referencing Sheldon from TBBT; iirc he's terrified of chickens and was attacked by one as a child.

And tree'd by one too.

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Never piss off a bird, because it's not just chickens, most birds can be surprisingly aggressive in the right circumstances (and I don't mean in an "attack to defend themselves" kind of way).

We (humans) are just lucky most birds are too small to harm us and our size intimidate them, but seeing them fighting each other or another animal of their seize is weirdly scary.

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
To see chickens from a new perspective, go to the zoo and bribe a keeper to let you try to pet a cassowary. That is how the rest of the animal kingdom see birds most of the time.

Or just get close to an ostrich used to get feed by humans, but don't feed them. Now, enjoy running away <3

I have no idea whether this is a troll post or not.

On the one hand, I want to believe because awesomeness.

On the other hand, though... poor tree crows. D: It's like a real life version of the Sims.

My chickens would run down mice, kill and eat them. It sounded awful but it solved out mouse problem?

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I wish my chickens would do this sometimes, although I'd worry about them eating a poisoned one, since not everyone is going to avoid rat poison for fear of accidentally poisoning the things that eat them, ie. my cat. He's a good mouser, but there's just one of him and lots of rats.
