Authors who try to make their fic ~deeper by adding a million philosophical quotes to every chapter.

I pretty much never read university/college AUs anymore because people like to have their characters read the same srs classic novel or do the same physics problems that they're probably doing in class, and it starts sounding less like fic and more like you want everyone to know how smart you are. There's a published author who does the same shit with everything he researches for his crime fiction, and it really takes all the fun out of a murder mystery to have some middle aged dude trying to teach me how to use a computer for half the book.

Sort of the same thing as above: your taste in music/your character's taste in music. I care about neither. Having your character love an indie band so people will recognise your awesome taste? Boring to people who want to read plot.

Characters who are otherwise mature adults having a BFF who is designated to make all of their life decisions for them. I don't know why this is such a prevalent thing. I am looking at you, Avengers fandom. Your randomly appearing Natasha Gives You Advice segments are getting old.

Oh god I forgot about the whole character's music taste! So often, it relies on the reader KNOWING those musicians for the joke/emotion/whatever to work, and some of us are culturally deprived. *points to self*

I think music is VERY hard to incorporate into fiction in general. The only times I've seen it done well is Spider Robinson (who's a musician himself), Stuck Rubber Baby, and Mail Order Bride, and that's because they found ways to show the emotions of the songs involved, rather than just, "HEY LOOK AT MY TASTE."

Back when My Chemical Romance was huge, it was an actual thing to have emotional fic with characters listening to their songs and painting their nails black or whatever.

I mean, I get that people get caught up in music and they have strong feelings about it that they want to share because it speaks to their soul or something, but I just find it funny. Bad person award!

I don't have a problem with people recommending playlists or writing songfic and labelling it as such (which I don't read), but when it pops up without warning, I back button.

Yeah, I feel like I'm getting too old and boring for all these new cultural references.

Oh, I remember! Off the top of my head, I remember songfic for My Immortal (of course), Clint Eastwood, and Linkin Park. I never cared for it, because in my opinion, song lyrics look damn stupid printed, unless you already know the song. Oftentimes, it's piggybacking off the emotions of the song, rather than writing it yourself.

It's like the emo version of the pop culture reference.

The music thing works for me if and only if I actually also like the band myself. So, yes, what I'm saying is that you're right.

(The Natasha Gives You Advice segments are fine, though, as long as Natasha is actually just ninja'ing in at random times to dispense some homespun wisdom and lean immediately secret-agent'ing away)

See, I could get behind her dropping through a window and giving people wake-up calls, because Natasha does not have time for your shit.

It's this weird maternal caretaker role to all these grown men written like needy infants that I just don't get. I mean, if you need that for your id fic, go ahead and write it, but it's in every fic I read that has her in it lately - like that's how fandom as whole sees her? Like she only exists to shelter all the woobiefied male avengers from reality?
