Fanfic Pet Peeves

What are yours? And for this thread, lets go with ones that are truly pet peeves, not huge obvious flaws.

Fanfics starting with the premise "what if X thing was different from how it went in canon (via time travel, fix-it, outsider knowledge, gender-flip, etc.)", continuing in that vein for about 3-6 chapters while being very interesting but then falling apart after a while of trying to shove in crossovers, OCs overtaking the plot, god-modding, that sort of thing.

Popular fanon characterizations. 9 times out of 10, the characterization is troll-y and obnoxious. I especially hate it when the fic's not even about the character; s/he just pops up to troll the main characters and then leave. I don't understand the appeal at all, and it's so pervasive.

Honestly just certain writing tropes: first person perspective, inconsistent tense, stuff like that.

Also: fics that do slow burn but then sort of disappoint on the sex part. Ugh.

Also "normalizing" non-normal characters. It just seems to defeat the point.

- fics with 200-word "chapters"

When people post like twenty 200 word drabbles as individual stories all at once.

Bad characterization, especially flat characterization that relies on stereotypes and black and white rather than complexity.

First, or even worse second person.

Boring sex scenes.

PWPs that have more plot than sex. If you're writing a plotty fic, awesome. Don't tell me it is a PWP and then only give me a little tiny bit of sex and a ton of plot.

-dumb tags. Seriously. Characters in the fic, genre, pairing, and fuck off.

-Overused cliches like "7 times character A did something and one time s/he didn't".

-Getting preachy and SJWy about content, or NOT having certain content in the author's notes.

-Most author's notes in general.

Shipping of a non-canon pairing in a story where the plot has nothing to do with the ship. I see this with a wide variety of ships, but each author who does this always does it with one specific ship. Take off the goggles, please!

Anything involving multi. Maybe someone somewhere has written it well, but at this point, nothing will make me back button out faster.

As the poster above reminded me: the "I'm not bi/gay, it's just you" drives me up the wall. It's not romantic. You're just trying to go "no homo" while keeping the hot gay sex - please stop.

Overuse of epithets, the word 'lover', and 'Their tongues battled for dominance' though I gotta be honest I find that one funny rather than irritating.

Descriptions of characters' appearances, particularly if it's from a visual medium (TV, movies, etc.). We know what the characters look like!! I don't mind the odd reference to eyes, hair, whatever, if it's subtle, but taking time out to give us a rundown of this very popular character's physical appearance is so jarringly dumb.

I have a lot of fanfic pet peeves but two I was just recently reminded of:

When they are kissing and almost suffocate because they have to ~come up for air~. Normal people have noses and are able to use them for breathing.

And biting. Look, I know you think it's kinda hot for some reason that character A bites character B and draws blood immediately. Just... unless your characters are vampires or have pointy teeth, it's not actually that easy to just draw blood. Especially on the neck where the skin is pretty thick. If someone bites you so hard that you have an actual bloody tooth mark on your neck/shoulder/wherever, it will hurt like hell because to actually damage the skin with normal blunt human teeth is difficult.

In fanfic stories where there are a lot of other things going on, but somehow the story comes around to everything depends on the author's OTP getting together, and it's all everyone cares about WHEN IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Look I know you like your ship....but I think Dumbledore probably cares more about defeating Voldemort than Harry and whoever you prefer getting together.

A lot of basic beginner hallmarks, like crack fics written by 14-17 year olds. I don't get mad at the people who write them, but I find it incredibly hard to read.

Bursting into song out of nowhere when it doesn't make sense.

Misspellings of names/places. The most notable offender being all the variations of Hermione.

Most recently it really bugs me when people write Fereldan instead of Ferelden when they refer to the country itself.

Oh, and people who use slash for "open-minded" cred but are homophobic or biphobic to different degrees.

That thing where satellite characters are assigned reactions (most often to relationships, sometimes to events) according to the needs of the author/plot rather than how they'd probably actually react. 'Character A will act like a bitch because ... I need someone to act like a bitch', or 'Characters L and M will totally be onboard with this, despite the fact that canonically they hate anything and everything to do with that group and will need a lot more than a couple of kisses and some heartfelt declarations to accept it', or 'Character Z will understand why Character D essentially raped Character E and will absolutely support their continued relationship', that sort of thing. It usually bugs me more when the tropes involved in the ships/events are ones I have a lot of trouble with (healing cock, soulbonds, trust-easily-granted, etc), but even with innocuous ships or plots it still bugs me when authors make it very obvious that the only characters with actual characterisation in this story are going to be the two leads.

This is kinda weird, but I hate AUs where the main couple meet each other for the first time and the fic goes to great lengths to have the POV character wax poetic about how hot the other character was. Like "Max looked up at the stranger he had just bumped into. It was the hottest man Max had ever seen. He didn't think he'd ever seen such perfect pale skin on a man, and it contrasted perfectly with the man's sexy dark hair. Max couldn't help but notice how slim yet muscular the man's arms were." Etc etc. I don't know why it bugs me, because I know being physically attracted to someone isn't strange, but I just don't like it when the first thing one character does upon meeting the other is think about how OMG so hot they are.

Oh, let's see.

When an author gets a small but obvious canon detail wrong. Or, well, at least I think it's obvious.

When it is fairly evident the author didn't even try to spellcheck.

When capitalization is completely hit or miss.

Anime fics where characters don't use the correct canon honorifics to refer to each other. I know it's petty, but it throws me right out of the story. Is it so hard to check the canon first? And if all you've seen is the dub that doesn't use honorifics, then don't put them in! Honestly I find it much less distracting to have all the cast not using honorifics for each other the way they do in the dub than to have a fic where a character who never uses any honorifics is suddenly calling people '-chan' all over the place or where a character who usually calls their best friend 'A-chan' has started calling her 'A-san' for no apparent reason.
