Nah, I just know the pathology. There is no "be nice" directive, trust me.

Or hey, don't trust me and do some research! It would be nice if more people legitimately knew about antisocial personality disorder instead of claiming everyone else is a "psycho" for behaviours that don't jive with them.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
i was joking (the concept of the joke being that maybe some people with the pathology happened to coincidentally do those things for reasons that had nothing to do with the pathology)

sorry that didn't come across

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-08 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It came across. It was more intended as a PSA for anyone reading this thread.

Which is my bad, I could have been clearer but I had rice on the stove.

That really would be nice. I know a friend of a friend that I can't stand talking about tv shows with because she's constantly deciding that some characters are sociopaths without actually understanding how that works. I really hate armchair psychology based on stereotypes of illnesses.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's usually based on the worst examples of characters that are supposed to be sociopaths, too. Buffalo Bill, Dexter... those aren't even accurate depictions of the disorder!

It makes me a bit mad, honestly. These days I will straight up turn something off if the writers get it wrong or play into tropes when trying to depict mental illness.

Yeah. Like, I can put up with it in some contexts (I have a guilty weakness for playing Badass Loony characters in video games) but multi in particular will make me turn shit off.

Mostly because practically ALL the representation fucking sucks. I have someone with schizophrenia among my tumblr followers, and sometimes we just kvetch about being lumped in together as the axe-murderers of pop culture. (And often mistaken for each other.)

Kinda going off on a tangent, but I really wish people would quit labeling pretty boy characters as psychopaths/sociopaths and acting like it's a romantic thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
wtf

seriously

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait what, this is happening?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Blame Twilight and 50 Shades.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, more like blame freaking Sherlock, and Steven "Asspull" Moffat.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Like the writers themselves did in the first series of The Fall.

Ugh, I turned that off so quickly.

Dexter did it right. The murder wasn't made sexy or stylish and the murderer wasn't made into a fucking glamorous, dangerous prettyboy, the murder was just shown as fucked up and really, really funny in the darkest, most horrible way.

hear, hear.

Incidentally I'm actually writing a character which I am making an effort to make him fall into the actual ASPD/psychopath spectrum. i.e., poor emotional skills, gives zero shits about the world around him, poor impulse control, doesn't think ahead, zero care for what anybody else thinks or wants, vaguely charming despite all this.
It's amazing what a boring person he actually is, haha. He's more of a walking plot device than a character.
(however, I'm also purposely avoiding actually diagnosing him as such, and admit that my knowledge comes from reading some books about the disorder(s), and not clinical or anything).

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the need to point out that sociopathy is not antisocial personality disorder.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard arguments to either side of this debate.

Personally, I think it still has useful classification purposes to separate the two, but imho if we're going to put Asperger's under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder, we might as well categorize ASPD as a spectrum disorder as well.

I expect we'll the majority rule in the next DSMVI, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's right, ASPD is probably better classified as a spectrum disorder. I do kind of want to argue that this goes beyond the DSM. Psychopathy/sociopathy will probably always be diagnosed with other diagnostic tools unless there are major revisions to the ASPD in the DSM (which there won't be in a long time).

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a very nasty thing to try to diagnose and I'm very glad I'm not in a position to have to take it on, honestly. There's just so much legality and stigma and misinformation even in psych circles, that it's just a beast to try to really understand the disorder even with years of study.

So yeah, you're probably right about that. No one is going to be making many strides (though there are a few people trying to) with a condition that is marginalized to the extent that ASPD/DSPD/sociopathy/psychopathy/whatever terminology you're using is at the moment.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. This is why I'm actually against the ASPD diagnosis being used as a stand-in for psychopathy because there is so much stigma against being psychopathic. The thing is, only a small percentage of people who get diagnosed with ASPD would actually meet the diagnosis for psychopathy, but they still get the stigma of being "psychopathic". And this is only one reason why these two diagnoses shouldn't be conflated with each other.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I see the logic there, and I don't entirely disagree, but I do think there might be some weight to making it a diagnosis for legal purposes rather than medical ones... if you follow. I don't necessarily think that there's a different neurology or mechanism to the diagnosis of psychopathy than there is to ASPD spectrum, however it does (usually) rate as something in more urgent need of care than the average diagnosis.

But that's the whole problem with this nest of snakes here... there are too many politics involved to really go about the business of making the right decision for the people who are actually affected. It sucks, really, because the current system is just not satisfactory, but like hell it's going anywhere any time soon.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm following! Honestly, if both ASPD and psychopathy were treated as spectrum disorders it would probably be a great step forward for both diagnoses both from a legal standpoint and a medical one. But at this point, they're both not. Here's to (hopefully) seeing a change in the DSM in another 10 years.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-09 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Here's to (hopefully) seeing a change in the DSM in another 10 years.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I think it's heading that way.... but we'll see. It certainly would make things a lot less shitty for people with so-called low risk conditions who have to suffer because of media sensationalism.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know it's at least heading in that direction! Agree very much on that last point.
