Harmless Pet Peeves

Reposted from misfire. What are some pet peeves of yours that are essentially harmless, or at least should be harmless?

Re: Harmless Pet Peeves

- People who cheer during live recordings of sad songs two minutes into them. I know it's just me and I'm weird, but I like to get really into the song I'm listening to, and that just... kills it for me.

- People who don't understand that I like to watch previews at the movies and talk to me through them.

I don't think your first one is weird, I mean I actually prefer to not listen to live recordings because I usually only want to hear the song. I also don't like it when my friends try to sing along to a song I want to listen to, I had a friend who loves to sing who didn't get that at all.

I mean I can ignore it in certain situations, concerts or if everyone is goofing around and singing. But otherwise I want nothing in my ear drums except the song itself.

"People who don't understand that I like to watch previews at the movies and talk to me through them."

OMG, this! I love previews! They're like the appetizer to the movie: by the time they're over, I am in the movie watching zone. I'm always disappointed when there are few or no previews before a movie.

Part of the fun of going to the movies is getting to see them. I want to know what's coming out. I want to see the extended, theatrical trailers. I am fully ready to get hyped about a new movie for the next time I have the chance to go to the theater.

- People who don't understand that I want to watch THE GODDAMN MOVIE at the movies, and talk to me through it....

And when I try to ignore them, they just become even more persistent. If I answer their question, not matter how abrupt my answer is, they respond with another question. And keep asking it again if I ignore it. So I have to choose between participating in the fucking conversation they're trying to have, or listening to them repeat a question ten times, louder each time.

It's so stupid, I know, but people that say "ups" instead of "U-P-S". Just grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I don't I've ever heard anyone do that before, but it would probably irrationally annoy me too if I did

people do this?

Re: Harmless Pet Peeves

This one no longer applies, but when I was in middle/high school and college I hated being quizzed about school by anyone who wasn't a parent or grandparent. It was the worst when I was failing a class, but even if I wasn't... it just got so annoying. I can see why it happens, especially now that I'm of the "grown up" fold and steadily realizing that's about all I can relate to with younger family members, but still.

it's rude, it's like asking an adult if they're having problems at work, basically.

I got so so SO sick of people asking me about college. It started before I graduated from high school and continues, occasionally, to this day (though a lot less than it was, and I'm thankfully no longer in college). It got to the point where when I went back and visited my old church, I thought about bringing some note cards that all said, "I'm at [university]. I'm a [year]. I'm studying [major]. No, I don't like it."

I think it was less the redundancy itself but more than that's the first thing people thought of when they saw me. And while I really miss that church, and this isn't the main reason I left, I still cringe a little at the idea of going back and feeling like this is all people are going to do. :/

People who call you on the phone with background noise. It's especially peevish for me because I have hearing aids, meaning the background noise feeds right into my ear and is louder than the person's voice.

I know not everyone can help this one though, sound travels easily in some houses, and some people live in small apartments where they really only have so much space to call from.

People who whistle idly in public, even if they're really good whistlers.

Ugh, same, with one exception: one semester when I was trudging up campus for a daily 8am class, I would always pass a guy who was whistling the theme tune from Disney's Robin Hood--every day. It was so quirky that it just became a fun part of my otherwise blah morning.

People who tap things. The coworker I share an office with does this (among other annoying things) and it makes me want to drive a pen through her hand.

When someone dies and people who barely ever talked to them or hadn't in a very long time are all "OMG so and so was my favorite person and I'm so upset."

Re: Harmless Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
This irritates me too, but the older I get, the more I get the other side of it. There's a lot of people who used to be big part of my life or changed me in some huge fundamental way that I don't talk to anymore.

An old best friend. She was the first person I truly fell in love with, got me through some seriously bad shit, introduced me to all kinds of things that I still love today. We haven't talked in at least ten years, but I know if I heard she'd died I'd be devastated.

My step-grandmother. She bought me a piano even though she barely knew me. I played for hours every single day for years. She sent me CDs and DVDs of classical music and operas and plays. We only ever met a handful of times and never really kept in touch, and now that my granddad is dead I'm not in contact at all. But she's still one of my favorite people in the world because of what she did for me. I can only hope that when I'm older I'm as graceful and generous as she was.

One of my teachers. He gave me something to do during breaks to keep me away from bullies. He helped me take advantage of cool oppurtunies, like doing a poetry workshop or letting me help with big projects. He helped me deal with a crappy homelife when literally every other adult I knew was oblivious. I'd have committed suicide ten times over if not for him.

Sometimes you just have to accept that a person can mean a lot to someone else, even if they aren't "close" or don't talk anymore or whatever.

When husbands whose wives are pregnant say "we're pregnant."

I can't think of anything wrong with saying this, but it annoys me so much it makes me cringe.

When people don't talk loud enough for you to hear them, so you either have to keep asking them to repeat themselves (And annoy then) or pretend you know what they said (And possibly make an ass out of yourself).

My mom has gotten worse and worse at this lately, and I don't know what to do. I have pretty excellent hearing as well, but she might as well be whispering and even though I've asked she makes no effort to speak louder. Sighhh

When people ask you a question or address you in some small-talky way, but do so to the back of your head when you are looking in a different direction while standing some distance away in a place where there are other people within earshot (so it's not obvious to you who they are even talking to since you can't see who they're looking at) and not speaking loudly enough to be sure to get your attention if you are lost in thought or focusing on something else (especially if you clearly *are* focusing on something else) and then they get mad at you when you don't notice right away.

As a young-ish woman, I used to think this just was a thing some guys did on purpose because they wanted female attention but also wanted to validate their belief that women are horrible and were intentionally shunning them. However, I've noticed women doing this to me, too, recently.

people singing in movies.

i don't know how i sat through like two or so seasons of glee - maybe because i knew the songs? but i HATE singing in tv shows or movies so much. this is also the reason why i don't know any disney songs that people keep referencing in fics or cry over on my dash or whatever. i don't know why i hate it so much, but it's just unbearable to watch for me. strangely, it doesn't bother me in anime and i enjoy watching shows in which there's lots of singing (aikatsu, utapri ...) but if the song doesn't catch my interest right of the bat, i'll probably skip it. same for ops/eds, i watch them once and then i skip them for the rest of the season. i don't even care if they add changes to the op/ed animation as the story progresses, i just can't be bothered to watch it.

(like one of the anons before me, i also hate when people whistle in public, especially men. it might have to do with my misophonia though?)
