What I'm curious about is who's force feeding you sappy tropes against your will so that you need to balance them out with darkfic, as opposed to, I don't know, just not reading fic containing tropes you don't like?

Not OP, but sappy one true love tropes (or people searching for their one true love) are all over movies and TV and most forms of media, hard to avoid.

Is OP not capable of changing the channel or switching off the TV, then? Are they under some legal obligation to watch movies they don't like or read books they don't care for?

Uhhhh...you do realize you can't know whether you like a movie/book or not until AFTER you watch/read a considerable portion of it, right?

And I don't think it's that easy to find a list of "sappy one true love movies to avoid" online.

And sure they can turn it off when they see it, but only AFTER they have already watched the "sappy one true love" bit. Otherwise, how would they know it's a sappy one true love movie? Movies aren't tagged and warned for like fic. There's no "WARNING: SAPPY ONE TRUE LOVE MOVIE" in the opening credits. People don't have magic psychic ninja powers that help them realize that the movie they're watching is going to be a sappy one true love movie so they can know to turn it off before any of the sappy one true love parts start.

And it would be a pain in the ass to not watch any movie unless you nagged your friends to find one who had seen it already and made them tell you if it's a sappy one true love story or not.

And the lack of the sappy one true trope is often a spoiler too.

So...it's really not that easy to avoid stuff you dislike, because you don't know if you'll dislike it or not without first imbibing enough of it to irritate you.

It's kind of funny that you think it's somehow impossible to figure out whether or not a movie is a sappy true love movie without watching most of it. Have you not seen movie posters? Sappy true love movies are generally marketed to a crowd that likes that sort of thing and the marketing is not particularly subtle. Have you heard of trailers? Trailers give you an idea of what a movie is about, and it uses clips from the actual movie itself. Have you heard of IMDB or plot summaries?

Nobody has to watch a movie in total ignorance anymore. I promise you that you don't need tags (LOL!) or magic psychic ninja powers to figure out the general content of a movie, and if you choose to utilize NONE of the resources that will speedily tell you what a movie is about, then it's your own fault. I suppose it's possible that OP is walking into movie theaters, blindly buying a ticket to the first movie that pops up and sitting through 3/4 of it without first getting some idea what it's about, but then OP can hardly claim to be a helpless victim to all the big bad true love stories that force themselves into their eyeline. LOL!

No. Yes, you can figure out the context of SOME movies that way. Some of them are very obviously a sappy true love romance. But many of them are sneakier and less of a foregone conclusion.

Those are the ones I'm talking about. I mean, it would be pretty damn silly to get pissed off if a movie that's very obviously a fluffy rom-com had a sappy true love romance, because that's kind of the point.

But when a movie seems like it's meant to be about some fascinating historical event or a high-concept sci-fi idea or a realistic story about some social issue or situation, or a biting satire, or an ethical thriller, or stuff like that....and suddenly it has a lame romantic subplot worthy of some fluffy rom-com thrown into it, THAT'S what's irritating.

Okay but, a lot of movies that aren't romances have sappy "one true love" subplots in them. Most movies have some kind of romance in them, doesn't matter what the genre is. And I mean shit, I knew they were gonna do Hulk/Black Widow for Age of Ultron, but I sure as fuck didn't know it was gonna be as sappy and ham-handed as it was, and it was obnoxious. But are you seriously gonna sit there and tell me I should have purposely spoiled the fuck out of myself when it came to that and not have not seen a movie I was really looking forward to because of a subplot that wasn't my cup of tea?

I don't understand people like you, honestly, because it's like you can't abide people having pet peeves or getting annoyed by things in media. It's all or nothing: they either have the like every part of it, or it's their own damn fault for not avoiding it altogether.

Does switching off a movie you dislike erase your memory of the annoying parts you've already watched? No. It does not.

In fact, as said above, you kind of HAVE to watch parts that annoy you in order to even realize you dislike it and to decide to turn the movie off. Maybe turning the movie off in the middle reduces the amount of annoyance by half, but it's still annoyance and it still piles up if it happens a lot.

It's difficult because a lot of movies have sappy love subplots that come out of nowhere and are pasted on to increase the demographic appeal. You'd have to avoid the majority of movies to avoid this one true love stuff.

It is kind of frustrating when all the fic for your OTP tends toward tropes (be they dark or sappy) that you're not a fan of. OP isn't asking that people quit writing sappy fic, just saying that they get burned out when they read nothing but.

Not OP, but for the last while my small fandom has been 95% sap. There was an influx of newbies and they (and the remaining oldies) seem to prefer their fic sugar-sweet.

So lately, if you want to read something new, it's sapfic or nothin'.
