Boy, I don't get that.

I mean, you do what you want to do, I'm just saying, I don't even come close to understanding how you can feel that way.

Man, I just need all that stuff for its own sake. I love when fiction strips me bare emotionally.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What I'm curious about is who's force feeding you sappy tropes against your will so that you need to balance them out with darkfic, as opposed to, I don't know, just not reading fic containing tropes you don't like?

OP is trapped in 'A Clockwork Orange,' but instead of films they are screening fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I'm so sorry I didn't take your problem seriously, OP. Quick, make a secret that tells us your location so we can send out the Darkfic Rescue Squad for a life-saving reprogramming!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-20 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
That would explain so much about 99% of fic 'critcisms'.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but sappy one true love tropes (or people searching for their one true love) are all over movies and TV and most forms of media, hard to avoid.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Is OP not capable of changing the channel or switching off the TV, then? Are they under some legal obligation to watch movies they don't like or read books they don't care for?

It is kind of frustrating when all the fic for your OTP tends toward tropes (be they dark or sappy) that you're not a fan of. OP isn't asking that people quit writing sappy fic, just saying that they get burned out when they read nothing but.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but for the last while my small fandom has been 95% sap. There was an influx of newbies and they (and the remaining oldies) seem to prefer their fic sugar-sweet.

So lately, if you want to read something new, it's sapfic or nothin'.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I get you OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I only read 'darkfic' that heavily features the One True Love trope. Darkly.

I like all those things and the "one true love" in the same fic...

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-05-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, same. They don't HAVE to be in the same fic, but it can be a nice change of pace when they are.

I'm a sap though, so even though I roll my eyes at the true love trope if it's poorly written or too obvious, I will often go along with it anyway.

I like a mix of things too.

I tend to remedy the problem of not finding what I want to read about my OTP by just writing it myself. Still, darkfic is awesome and I like seeing my OTP under duress as well.

We haven't had a rubber duck secret in awhile.

Wouldn't it be a better balance to read fic that is plot-oriented and romance-free, or fic that has a complex and unsappy approach to relationships, rather than zooming way into the other end of the spectrum?

In my experience, trying to palate-cleanse from fluff using extreme darkfic usually just makes me ping-pong from one unsatisfying extreme to the other, missing all the more effective alternate types of fic between the extremes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck finding those in-between fics though. In several of my fandoms, we have pretty much two extremes: Super Fluff or Super Angst.

Newbies come in with sappy sweet or ultra cute fics, which then the older fans try to balance out with darkfic or the newbies are the ones coming in with this ultra dark stuff so then the older fans try to write more fluffy to counteract it.

Good luck finding one of these legendary in-between/well-balanced fics.

But honestly, I do find it interesting when I look at the reviews of the rare ones that aren't extreme in either direction. Most of the time, the reviews are just comment after comment asking why the fic wasn't cuter or darker or 'suggestions' to make the fic so. I actually stopped writing for one fandom because that's *all* the feedback I was getting. It's like...some of us aren't into that? We want something that doesn't make us cry/lose yet more faith in humanity/make an appointment with our dentist to check for cavities.

I get that. I mean when I'm angry or depressed, I tend not to want happy happy. I tend to want to read death and destruction and the occassional "Rocks fall/Everybody dies" fic.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2015-05-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Weird, I'm exactly the opposite. When I feel happy and calm, I love reading dark or sad fic and I enjoy it a lot, I feel like I have a really strong interest and empathy with it. When I'm depressed or angry, I can't bear to read dark fic at all, and reading sad fic actively pisses me off, and I have to read sweet/fluffy/funny fic instead.

OMG EVIIIL RUBBER DUCKY!

I feel ya, OP. I'm kinda the opposite though. I'll binge on dark fic and then need to read something super sappy and fluffy to break it up.

You and a bunch of other people though right? I mean I don't think this is unusual.

(Me, I don't mind all that stuff being *in* a work, but I usually like to have my happy ending.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I get around it by writing my own fics which are still relationship-oriented, but where the love people have for each other is never that "one true love" kind of malarkey.

In my experience, "one true love" in fiction is often shorthand for the writers not really caring about the romance side of the plot, but feeling they have to slap one in there anyway, or else the whole thing being aimed at easily conned teens.

For a good couple of years I only read darkfics, like the OP. I still search for fic A03 using tags like dubcon, to try to avoid the kind of fics where two people are meant for each other eternally, and that's shown as desirable. It doesn't always work but at least it's a start.
