Edge of Tomorrow

(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
My son just forced me to watch this (I'm very much not a Tom Cruise fan, I generally don't care for the whole space marines vs aliens thing, or "gimmick" plots) but... damn I was impressed with pretty much every aspect of it. Even the freaking soundtrack.

Anyone else seen it and want to chew it over with me?

I loved this movie so much. I hate Tom Cruise so much. But watching him die over and over was cathartic, so by the time the character started being a decent human being I was actually rooting for him.

The plot was really interesting, I thought. And Emily Blunt was perfection. There was nothing I didn't love about this movie.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my feelings about Tom and his character as well.

(And she was great; a perfect example of a smart strong character.)

I also thought the aliens were suitably, well, alien. The way they moved was just creepy and frightening enough without being all "oh look at our SFX!"

Did you at all feel that the end was... ambiguous? In terms of the blood? (Don't want to spoiler anything).

Not entirely sure what you mean about the ending? It seemed to wrap things up pretty well to me.

I was wondering whether or not SPOILER: Cage would be looping again? Or did the omega ooze basically just reset him one final time?

Oh my god. That was Emily Blunt? She seriously is That Woman Who Is In Everything But I Never Know It's Her...

Yup. She has quickly become one of my favorite actresses.

I just realized I never bought a copy of this movie. This must be rectified immediately.

I didn't think it was too bad either. Though the shoehorned in kiss at the end made me roll my eyes. But that was literally my only complaint.

I thought it was pretty good. I don't normally find Tom Cruise amazing or anything, but I think certain roles can suit him and he seemed fine in this one. It was definitely a better than average movie.

Loved the movie but it took forever for me to see it. I love Tom Cruise, so it was no chore on my part.

I really enjoyed the relationship between the two characters but I wish there was more fanfic addressing what happened afterwards. I've read a couple of awesome ones but sadly this movie has almost no fandom. :(

Loved the beginning of the movie, hated how predictable it got at the end.

Elaborate on predictability?

/wavering but suddenly wary again

Fell into the Hollywood last act trap: time is suddenly running out for no discernible reason so we have to have the hastily assembled ragtag single team go in. Most of the team will die in order for the hero to make it to the place where he can do Hero Thing except maybe the love interest.

Then they even did the whole hero not!sacrificing himself and followed it up with the happy ending. Where the happy ending is the reunion with the love interest who doesn't know him anymore.

I swear, they couldn't have picked an ending I would have predicted more of than that if they'd just taken The Matrix's ending, filed the serial numbers off and... Oh wait. They kind of did.

Predictable in the sense that they'd defeat the Mimics?
Or that he'd pursue Rita?

Both senses.

It was pretty decent. I'm reading the book it's based on right now because I liked the idea of the movie but felt like it wasn't quite done justice and I like to compare.

(Book is All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka for anyone curious.)

I might watch the movie again after I've finished the book, but yeah, so far I'm surprised by some of the stuff they changed--that seemed unnecessary in my eyes.

It was way more fun than I was expecting it to be that's for sure, I pretty much loved Rita and while I didn't overly care for Cage the rest of the movie kept me entertained.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I read an advanced review that raved about it, so I went and saw it in theater. Even then it exceeded expectation (the review had somehow missed the humor).

I have a lot of conflicting feelings about Tom Cruise. I don't care for him at all as a person and find him kind of creepy, but god help me I like almost all of his movies. I don't know why! A few of them, like Top Gun, are even some of my overall favorite movies. I can even admit that some of them are objectively bad, but I still enjoy the hell out of them. Why, Tom Cruise?
