I haven't been following this that closely, but it sounds like the sort of thing some teenagers do, regret, and grow out of.

I'm a lot more worried about people who think a single couple spawning 19 children--with the expectation that those children will survive to adulthood and have an average of 3+ children apiece--isn't a deeply antisocial act. It could be an impenetrable ingenuousness, but I think it's probably, deep down, as aggressive and warmongering as "Quiverfull" implies.

Many of my own ancestors had large families (6-12 children). I think at first that was in the context of conquering the American continent in the face of indigenous nations to be overpowered and reasonably high rates of disease, early death, and various potential kinds of infertility. After a while, it stopped making much sense societally. We have better medical care, we have vaccinations, and we're not going to go forth and conquer Canada.

My grandparents had...about half as many children as the Duggars, and I really don't recommend that. I like my extended family, but it puts a lot of pressure on the next generation knowing that any inheritance will be split so far there is effectively none.

In short, I don't know if they're fools or monsters, but they look like menaces to me.

:(

In the U.S., if you can find a Biblical basis for your actions ("be fruitful and multiply") then there are many, many people who will give you a pass for it even if they wouldn't do it themselves and do not think it is a good idea. Because many people see adherence to Christianity (even odd sects of Christianity) as being beyond reproach.

wtf? so you only care about your family insofar as they can provide you with monetary wealth after they die?

Yeah, I WTF'd on that same comment. Really? 'I like my family, but not if sharing the $$$ means there's less for me.' Wow.

And it skeeves me out when people act like an inheritance is their money to begin with.

DA. I'd maybe give that comment a pass. Below a certain threshold, being poor is hugely stressful, and ANY windfall of money (like inheritances) can feel absolutely critical. Obviously, it's a bad idea to be reliant on those kinds of windfalls (for example, I know people struggling to keep afloat who would then go on to use new income on things I would consider unnecessary, like TV service or a Mac laptop, hence keeping them in that situation), but when you're poor, it's really hard to break free from that mode of thinking (staking your well-being on the next monetary reprieve). I just know too many people who have needed and had to fight for inheritances, while I am well off enough that I wasn't eyeing it / thinking about it beforehand, and don't feel like it's MY money.
