They haven't. It seems even now, only niche groups of blog/fandom types are really aware of what it is. Everyone else sees them as this innocent Christian family who decided to have a bunch of kids, and trying to explain to them that they're a cult goes nowhere.

I mean, I'm not an evangelical Christian and long before this, I thought people were unfair to criticize them when "Michelle Duggar has the right to choose too!" Then I educated myself. But most people just think "cult" is an exaggeration.

Seriously, this is bigger than the Duggars, even bigger than ATI. It's about the environment that produces and empowers people like Bill Gothard and Michael Pearl, allowing them to acquire a devoted following. Call it a Christian problem or call it a fanaticism problem, but it's hurt too many people to ignore.

Very few people (let alone people in government) are willing to admit that the KKK is a Christian organization. One that has been connected to terrorist attacks that have killed people to boot.

And I say this as a practicing Christian.
ISIS is fucking despicable and yes, they are radical Muslims, but we can't pretend that only Muslims practice in dangerous extremism, or even that Christian terrorists exist.

Obviously these people very much go against Jesus's teachings of compassion and tolerance (as with the case of a majority of religious radicals) but ignoring that they exist doesn't fix the problem at all.

Unfortunately, a lot of them seem to be jumping to the defense, claiming it's okay because he was 15, and he only touched them over the clothes (and when he did under the clothes it was just for a few seconds, so it totes doesn't count) and OMG how dare anyone say anything because you're not perfect so you can't judge (but we can judge LGBT because Gawd is on our side, so we're totally not hypocrites) and stop being mean poo-poo heads to the child molester and the parents who covered it up for him and don't give two shits about the girls (four of whom are their own daughters) because they were probably asking for it anyway.

Wow. I apologize for the run-on. But yeah, that's the go to defense I've been seeing (some combination of that at least).

I haven't really been following the scandal, but how was it discovered that this abuse was taking place? Did one of the girls come forward? I think I heard something about a police report, but my understanding was that the Duggars covered it up so who went to the police? Did the girls go by themselves?

If anyone can shed some light on the details I would appreciate it.

I want every person they ever to walk across to give them the stink eye, I want random people crossing the road to avoid them, I want their tv show pulled and any books, ratings, companies whatever to fail.

I want them to be shamed into obscurity because clearly the law ain't going to do squat.

I was hoping this scandal would mean the network would cancel that God-awful show, the advertisements and interview requests would dry up, and this family would fade back into oblivion. Not only is the family's treatment of the daughters horrific, but they're obviously using God to sell themselves and earn money/run for office/earn more money.

This is also how I feel about Lena Dunham, but she's still going strong. :(

I think it's pretty sad that the stupid actions of a 15-year-old are being used to vilify the entire family. I also find it sad that the sisters have been named as victims, and no one seems to give a shit about their privacy. Now, I do think the one kid who perpetrated the actions is creepy as shit, no question about it. But the way everyone else in the family is being dragged through the mud stinks of a witchhunt, and I find it incredibly distasteful.

(And before you ask, I'm an atheist, TYVM.)

I haven't been following this that closely, but it sounds like the sort of thing some teenagers do, regret, and grow out of.

I'm a lot more worried about people who think a single couple spawning 19 children--with the expectation that those children will survive to adulthood and have an average of 3+ children apiece--isn't a deeply antisocial act. It could be an impenetrable ingenuousness, but I think it's probably, deep down, as aggressive and warmongering as "Quiverfull" implies.

Many of my own ancestors had large families (6-12 children). I think at first that was in the context of conquering the American continent in the face of indigenous nations to be overpowered and reasonably high rates of disease, early death, and various potential kinds of infertility. After a while, it stopped making much sense societally. We have better medical care, we have vaccinations, and we're not going to go forth and conquer Canada.

My grandparents had...about half as many children as the Duggars, and I really don't recommend that. I like my extended family, but it puts a lot of pressure on the next generation knowing that any inheritance will be split so far there is effectively none.

In short, I don't know if they're fools or monsters, but they look like menaces to me.

I was once in homeschooling circles in an area where there are some Quiverfull families and...I'll just say that this news about the Duggars didn't surprise me in the least. Makes me angry and sick and sad, but doesn't surprise me.
