Very few people (let alone people in government) are willing to admit that the KKK is a Christian organization. One that has been connected to terrorist attacks that have killed people to boot.

And I say this as a practicing Christian.
ISIS is fucking despicable and yes, they are radical Muslims, but we can't pretend that only Muslims practice in dangerous extremism, or even that Christian terrorists exist.

Obviously these people very much go against Jesus's teachings of compassion and tolerance (as with the case of a majority of religious radicals) but ignoring that they exist doesn't fix the problem at all.

Reminder that a religious extremist bombed the 1996 Olympics, and it was an evangelical Christian.

There most emphatically isn't one.

Um, in what timeframe?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever the Bosnian Serbs who slaughtered all those Croats and "Turks" in Bosnia called themselves.

Or, if you like, the Croat militants in the same conflict.

Or, if you go back before the Peace of Westfalen, pretty much John Calvin's entire "Reformed Church" movement. They burned Christians of the "wrong" sect at the stake as "witches." Those guys.

Or, before that, maybe the Pope who tried to exterminate the Cathars?

Or, you know, the freaking Crusaders, from the bunch who entered Jerusalem and killed every non-Christian to the nitwits who sacked Constantinople to profit the Doge.

Or, how about the Greek Patriarch who decided he could push the Emperor around and use the power of the Roman state to rob pagans.

The Crusaders (or the early Protestants) are most like, the Serbs are most recent.

Re: Um, in what timeframe?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but I really hate how people use examples from hundreds of years ago to go "see? Christians committed atrocities too so they are just as bad!" Society has evolved. This is 2015. The Crusades aren't something that happened 20 years ago. Regardless of what happened in the past, people today
(regardless of religion) are entitled to call out bullshit when they see it. If people are being beheaded and stoning women in the name of religion in the 21st century, there is a huge fucking problem. There is no modern Christian organization that comes even close to what ISIS is doing. At all.

Like, now. If you have to go back hundreds of years to find Christians acting like Muslims are today then you're kind of proving their point.

Look up "militas" and the history of domestic terrorism in the U.S. You ever noticed that since 9/11, this country likes to pretend there is no such thing as terrorism committed by white Americans upon other white Americans? All of a sudden, the only terrorists are brown people, usually Muslims.

DA

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, wow, a bombing by a single psycho nearly ten years old, burn all the fundies because clearly they're dangerous.

Meanwhile ISIS tosses gay men off buildings and beheads women and children daily. Call them on that, and you're a culturally insensitive Islamophobic asshole.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You can call them out you just can't refer to them as Muslims because that's problematic.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Going by that logic one could say calling the Duggars christians is problematic.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I really hope this is sarcasm.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody actually argues that criticizing ISIS is Islamophobic.

People will criticize you if you say that ISIS is bad specifically because they're Muslim (and I would also criticize anyone who said that the Duggars' Christianity is the cause of their evil). But I would agree that a particular form of institutionalized extremist fundamentalist Islam is part of the structure of ISIS, in a broadly analogous way to the way in which the Duggars' particular form of institutionalized extremist fundamentalist Christianity informs, justifies, and shields their behavior. And I would agree (I don't know why anyone wouldn't) that ISIS is overall much more harmful than the Duggars.

But the reason that people talk differently about the two is because they're talking, not in absolute terms, but about our society. And in our society, Muslims are a lot more likely to be unjustly persecuted, and evangelical Christians a lot more likely to be defended and justified and seen as a normal part of society and generally apologized for. And so people are on guard against promoting that persecution, whereas they want to stop the justification of the kinds of evil that the specific branch of Christianity they're talking about. Put in a sentence - Muslims in the West are persecuted more than Christians are.

And I don't think that's a particularly objectionable chain of thought, to be honest.

...what.

I'm a fairly fundamentalist Christian, and nothing in my religion condones rape, incest, or molestation. At least, not last time I checked. Maybe I should read the Book again.

A Christian religious extremist went on a killing spree a few hours from here, after making many radical anti-Muslim threats and with a long history of harassing Muslims.

Of course according to all the local news that was just total coincidence and he was angry about something totally unrelated. Like maybe a bad parking job, idk but it was totally not because he was a religious terrorist.

And an ISIS member in Boston was shot and killed after he lunged at them with a knife and made social media threats against police.

What's your point.

There is actually no proof yet that he was an ISIS member or that he lunged at police or made threats. There are contradicting reports out at the moment.

DA

How many people does the KKK kill daily? How influential are they in American politics?

I agree that both groups are ideologically despicable, but the KKK'S modern influence is nowhere near ISIS's. The KKK are rightly looked down upon as loons by the American population, as opposed to ISIS, which is treated like a legitimate threat. When people are afraid to draw cartoons because there is a real chance of violent retaliation, you know there's a problem.

I don't think anyone is saying that Christian terrorists don't exist, or that only Muslims can be dangerous extremists. But there is no other group that operates on the same level as ISIS. Not even close. You'll get a nutcase every now and then, but there is no unified Christian group in 2015 that makes a habit of beheading people, filming it, and showing it to the world like those barbaric acts are something to be proud of. Their ideology is driven by their Muslim faith, just like how the Duggars are driven by their Christian faith. Islam (like all religion) is not inherently a bad thing, but let's not try to pretend that ISIS isn't a Muslim group, because they are.

Re: .

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, far more people in America agree with the KKK - even if they don't identify with the group - than agree with ISIS.

Also, what are you trying to get at here, exactly? There's a difference between having a shitty opinion and actively trying to kill people who don't have the same shitty opinion.
