Of course Christians should squirm over the actions of one family whereas we need to bend over backwards to make sure Muslims aren't uncomfortable to the point that Obama refuses to refer to ISIS as being Islamic.

Hey, the Moms alone supposedly number One Million.

Seriously, this is bigger than the Duggars, even bigger than ATI. It's about the environment that produces and empowers people like Bill Gothard and Michael Pearl, allowing them to acquire a devoted following. Call it a Christian problem or call it a fanaticism problem, but it's hurt too many people to ignore.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Or you could be upset about both of those things. It's possible.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd be nice but the people who go after Christians are often the fiercest defenders of Islam.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Just stop. Stop trying to twist this into your pet rant. Jesus.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I find that the people who foam at the mouth over people defending Islam turn out to be horrible bigots.

Very few people (let alone people in government) are willing to admit that the KKK is a Christian organization. One that has been connected to terrorist attacks that have killed people to boot.

And I say this as a practicing Christian.
ISIS is fucking despicable and yes, they are radical Muslims, but we can't pretend that only Muslims practice in dangerous extremism, or even that Christian terrorists exist.

Obviously these people very much go against Jesus's teachings of compassion and tolerance (as with the case of a majority of religious radicals) but ignoring that they exist doesn't fix the problem at all.

Yes, wow, a bombing by a single psycho nearly ten years old, burn all the fundies because clearly they're dangerous.

Meanwhile ISIS tosses gay men off buildings and beheads women and children daily. Call them on that, and you're a culturally insensitive Islamophobic asshole.

A Christian religious extremist went on a killing spree a few hours from here, after making many radical anti-Muslim threats and with a long history of harassing Muslims.

Of course according to all the local news that was just total coincidence and he was angry about something totally unrelated. Like maybe a bad parking job, idk but it was totally not because he was a religious terrorist.

And an ISIS member in Boston was shot and killed after he lunged at them with a knife and made social media threats against police.

What's your point.

DA

How many people does the KKK kill daily? How influential are they in American politics?

I agree that both groups are ideologically despicable, but the KKK'S modern influence is nowhere near ISIS's. The KKK are rightly looked down upon as loons by the American population, as opposed to ISIS, which is treated like a legitimate threat. When people are afraid to draw cartoons because there is a real chance of violent retaliation, you know there's a problem.

I don't think anyone is saying that Christian terrorists don't exist, or that only Muslims can be dangerous extremists. But there is no other group that operates on the same level as ISIS. Not even close. You'll get a nutcase every now and then, but there is no unified Christian group in 2015 that makes a habit of beheading people, filming it, and showing it to the world like those barbaric acts are something to be proud of. Their ideology is driven by their Muslim faith, just like how the Duggars are driven by their Christian faith. Islam (like all religion) is not inherently a bad thing, but let's not try to pretend that ISIS isn't a Muslim group, because they are.

Re: .

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, far more people in America agree with the KKK - even if they don't identify with the group - than agree with ISIS.

I don't get what the point of this thread is. It comes across like the people who, when something bad happens to you and you're upset about it, will sneer about how someone else in the world has it objectively worse than you, so you should stop.

1. QF is not "one family."
2. Not only are Muslims not generally joining Daesh (ISIS), a lot of traditional Muslims are being killed by Daesh.
3. Do you really think that those of us (who are not fanatical Islamists ourselves) that criticise fanaticism in Christianity are somehow OK with it in Islam?

Re: SAY THAT TO MY FACE

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, educated, logical people know that Daesh is a movement using Islam as a cover so they can fill the power vacuum and set themselves up as the New Boss, Worse Than the Old Boss, who use the faith as a way to control/manipulate young boys who have grown up in a warzone, and represent Islam as a whole in the same way the KKK represents Christianity.

But then you get people like this who get their news from Fox News and their ilk, who couldn't be logical and fair if you held them over a tank of hungry crocodiles. Daesh is a handy new villain for them, and they even give them the legitimacy Daesh wants by calling them "ISIS".

Re: SAY THAT TO MY FACE

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Use as a cover implies that they don't believe in Islam. They do.

Also Daesh is just a term people use because they're scared to refer to ISIS as Islamic. We generally refer to the Nazis as Nazis too. That's not giving them legitimacy.

There are two possible reasons I can think of for this.

1. They are Christians themselves or come from a Christian background and are more comfortable criticizing their own religion/the religion of their family and/or culture rather than that of another culture.

2. There is a difference between criticizing a religion that has privilege and one whose adherents are discriminated against. Assuming those commenting are from western cultures, there is a difference between criticizing Christianity which has privilege in western countries (even those who aren't very religious at all) and Islam which doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
I always roll my eyes when I point out how ridiculous (some) Christians are and then they say I love Islam. No. I hate the religion. It's cruel and anti-woman. I'm allowed to hate both sets of ideals.
