I just thought it was kind of funny that people were so upset that she didn't fit a test whose purpose they clearly didn't understand (it's not meant to be a yardstick of an individual film's adherence to feminism) that they made up a whole new test that she was certain to pass. Do you really need to put your arguments about why she's a good character in test form?

Yeah, this. Bechdel test doesn't mean "feminist test". It's just a way of determining whether or not there is female presence in a movie, which can be a part of determining its feminism but not necessarily. There's always going to be some subjectivity and personal preference to determining if something is feminist, but the Mako Mori thing just seems like a kneejerk reaction to Pacific Rim failing the Bechdel test but fans still desperate to insist that it is feminist.

The Bechdel test is to feminism as BMI is to obesity: not a reliable indicator of anything on an individual level, but that doesn't stop most people from using it that way.

It didn't seem like that was the mindset of the person who first proposed the new test, but I'm sure it's the reason a lot of the fandom so readily embraced it.

Yeah, I know nothing about the person who created it, I just know the impression I got from the people I saw responding to it.

Ah thank you voice of reason. It bothers me a little how we're supposed to write her off as a female character just because she doesn't fit into some narrow parameters for feminism. That doesn't mean she's perfect, but I think it's ok to celebrate her regardless.
