As someone who has seen their fandom go into a frenzy over American Thanksgiving exchanges and contests (for a non-American property too), I completely agree. Somethings need to stop. It is just far too culturally insular.

Why is your reasoning that other people "need" to stop celebrating their holidays because you don't like them? I'm not sure how this helps make things more culturally diverse.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This. If you're wanting to diversify fandom, then definitely go ahead and promote exchanges around other holidays/events. The more, the merrier! But sheesh, there's no need to police those who are celebrating their cultural events.

da

A Diwali fic exchange, with a theme of "Light Inside the Darkness" would be a nice idea imo...

na

Oooooooooh that would be awesome! (I miss the Diwali parades from when I was living in Toronto.)

Thanksgiving is a bit funny because it would be American only (at least, that particular date). But idk, Thanksgiving itself is a familiar holiday in many countries, and it isn't a religious holiday, so I can't see it genuinely being offensive so much as it is a bit boggling for non-Americans.

Offensive is American Sherlock and Doctor Who fans asking how British fans are celebrating July 4th. At best it is culturally tone deaf, at worst it is genuinely trolling.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
is that really offensive or is it just ribbing?

Americans and Brits tend to make fun of each other

I don't think many Brits are that offended by July 4th

NAYRT

Depends on how it is put, I guess. I can see it being seen as friendly ribbing, but coming off as totally offensive put downs. If you have to defend it as joshing around or banter then chances are it is probably not appropriate.

You're offended by the fact that people poke fun at the UK losing the American Revolutionary War? Um, ok.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they think that the UK feels about that war like the US feels about Vietnam? Which would be just lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, there's nothing wrong with people around the world celebrating my birthday. Honestly, I encourage it! Cake for everyone!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for having a birthday! ~takes cake!~

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
that's funny as hell

Bwahahahaha! They actually do that? That's glorious. If I remember this come July 4, I'm going to post something on GC.

We won, suckers! Awwwwww yeah!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'd think there would be a really obvious snarky comeback for that...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! People have to learn that things are different in different places. It's a good way to learn!!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they know it's different in this case. Think about what July 4th is.

"You're having fun in a way I don't like, so stop!"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it needs to stop, but sometimes it is just weird, for instance to hold a Thanksgiving-themed challenge in a fandom in which Thanksgiving was never celebrated in canon, and also one in which a lot of the fans of it don't celebrate it either. It does feel a little like shoehorning in by the American mods and not stopping to think that their own holidays aren't universal.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I sort of agree. On the other hand, shoehorning in things that don't really fit with canon is standard fandom behavior.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Have you asked them to center challenges around other holidays, then? Or challenges that aren't set in a specific holiday at all but rather a season, or something like that? I'm not really seeing why this is "weird", because I know I'm on the internet and there are people from all over the world here. So I don't go around telling people their cultural celebrations are weird just because they're foreign to me.
