I imagine the vast majority of English speaking fandom is of Western European culture, and just aren't familiar with other holidays. I bet if you advertised enough and got at least a few people from your own culture to promise to participate, you might be able to make it work, but things like Christmas exchanges are probably always going to be more popular.

It's been suggested but you could always try to start your own! (Which might be easier said than done, and might not pick up any steam unless you put serious effort into promoting it, but I imagine there are other people out there that would appreciate such a thing.)

Though if you want to continue participating, that's fine. You don't have to tell anyone and even if they knew, I'm sure some of them wouldn't care. (The ones that would get all bent out of shape...well, they're worth ignoring anyway. It isn't that big a deal.)

I wouldn't sweat it. Ostensibly Christian holidays like Christmas are frequently treated as a secular holiday. I'm an atheist and while I don't put up a Christmas tree or decorations, I still have a holiday dinner and exchange presents with my family.

As someone who has seen their fandom go into a frenzy over American Thanksgiving exchanges and contests (for a non-American property too), I completely agree. Somethings need to stop. It is just far too culturally insular.

There are a lot of multifandom exchanges in the April/May/June/July months, if you're interested in writing during that time. Night on Fic Mountain just ran (it's sort of like Yuletide, but in the April/May/June period) but it might be something to look out for next year. Rarepair Exchange is currently in nominations period. If you like rare Asian fandoms then Parallels is currently in the nominations period, I think. If you like kids/YA book fandoms, then Exchange at Fic Corner is currently in nominations period.

For non-holiday events during the November/December months, I can't think of any offhand, but I don't usually participate in multifandom exchanges, so I can't be sure. But there is probably something, because there tend to be a lot of exchanges going on at that time. You might want to keep an eye on [community profile] fandomcalendar to see what pops up.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There's always Purimgifts. I've also seen some fests based on White Day years ago, and there was recently Adair crack based on more Jewish culture and holidays.

It might be a your-fandom-is-not-my-fandom thing, but in my animanga fandoms I see plenty.

In my last few fandoms, the only holiday-related exchanges were Christmas (sometimes framed as Secret Santas/otherwise non-denominational events) and Valentine's Day (or the following White Day).

The majority of events were set around e.g. characters birthdays, dates or number sequences relevant to canon, or random weeks/months the fandom decidesd to devote to a certain character or ship.

Like I said, that may have a lot to do with it not being a solely Western based fandom in the first place; using the character birthdays as an example, the Japanese fandom goes all out for those events with a flood of art, fan events and general celebrations so it makes sense for the Western side of fandom to match them. I don't know whether Western media makes as big a deal out of things like character birthdays in the same way.

If your fandom(s) is very Western-centric then it's probably going to follow more traditionally Western holiday conventions.

Springkink used to run (rather obviously) during spring.

Kink-bingo normally runs during the summer months/early fall; it's supposed to be back this year but I haven't seen any confirmation of that.

Honestly I think the "multifandom" part of your secret is the part causing you problems. Most individual fandoms have fests and exchanges running throughout the year on many different themes, but the concept of multifandom exchanges has really declined since their LJ heyday.

To be perfectly honest? Christmas these days isn't even ABOUT the religion anymore, unless you specifically worship said religion.

It's a gift exchange holiday these days, so having yuletide events isn't that weird.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[community profile] nightonficmountain runs over Spring. For dozens more multifandom events check [community profile] fandomcalendar. I get the feeling you haven't really been looking.

Although even in "Christian" cultures, Christmas is more of a pagan/feasting festival than anything else, and has been for quite a while, so bear that in mind. That was the original Yuletide fest anyway. The veneer of later Christianity is still hardly relevant for how many people celebrate it, although I understand the name itself may be offputting.

Honestly not trolling

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, are you into BtVS? And if so, have you looked into the Summer of Giles on LJ?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-06-07 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Just shows who's good at organizing fests... +1 to those events being secular.
Huh, there's no such events here. I wish we had at least St Patrick fests. 💃
Anyway, it's obviously about Yuletide. Captain Obvious, I know.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this helps any, but I'm currently debating on running a horror-themed fest? And while I was planning on posting starting in October, it's not going to be directly related to Halloween? Just don't know how to get the word out.

And I kind of want to run a winter themed porn fest but when to run it? Because when it's winter in a half of the world it's summer somewhere else and vice versa.

In theory I agree with you, though as a western christian myself, I'm a bit like the person upthread who said they would feel shy about writing about other religions as they might get it wrong.

My other nitpick is when non-Earth fandoms get Christmas dumped on them when they have no sensible reason for it. Worse yet is stuff like Valentine's Day. I don't want that in Middle Earth and expect the mid-Winter festival to be Yule.

I'm not either of those things too, but I grew up in a culture where western holidays are celebrated, so doing Christmas exchanges is fun for me.
