Wow, that is some self-righteous blather right there. "Hey, you've been accused of rape! Before you answer that accusation, you should invite everyone to have a conversation about consent!"

Given that she both doesn't advance the views that OP of this thread is advancing, and also explicitly declaims them in the update at the bottom, I think it's pretty unfair to accuse her of this in this way. It's a shittily written piece but I don't think there's any reasonable way to conclude that this is what she thinks.

Well she's not wrong. and as for the op of the thread, I kind of agree. If you care more about your reputation that about helping survivors come forward, I have to wonder what kind of feminist you are.

If feminism actually demands men sacrifice themselves on the pyre of ideology, I don't see any reason for men to be feminists.

1. No-one is asking for sacrifice of anything other than reputation, don't be melodramatic.

2. That sacrifice will be undone when it goes to trial. If it goes to trial and if the man is one of the 0.2% of men who are falsely accused. And probably even if he is guilty he will still be acquitted because we have a shitty justice system for women. So really, where is the sacrifice in letting it go to court and for you to be vindicated if you deserve it and even if you dont?

and finally 3. Why would men hold an ideology that does not benefit them? Maybe because it's the right thing to do? Do you pick your ideology based on how they can benefit you? Do you chose what is right or wrong based on how much good they do you personally? Because that's the type of thinking that lead to slavery. Men should be feminists because it is the only morally viable position to hold, not because they will get stuff for it.

in re: 1 and 2, you are asking for a sacrifice of money in legal fees and of reputation, and both of those are real things. It's a hell of a lot to ask someone to let everyone in their community consider them a bastard rapist. There's a real cost to that. Even leaving aside the risk of jail time, which if you think there's no chance of an innocent person being convicted you have far more faith in the legal system than I do.

in re: 3, I think people should be feminists because I think it's a just and moral position. I would not think that feminism could be considered in any way just or moral if feminism actually required this.

1) Do you have ANY idea how much your reputation can affect your life? Employers regularly google potential employees. What do you think would happen if first thing that came up was, "So-and-so IS A RAPIST!"

2) Why waste that much time and money because some psycho is spreading lies? Also, going through a trial can be challenging to everyone involved AND their families.

3)What kind of drugs are you on and can I have some?

OTHER than reputation? Well okay, then...

Well what is more important, the reputation of a man who will likely walk away from court a free man even if he is guilty, or the safety of a victimised woman who needs the courage to speak up?

Considering the woman in question is a lying asshole, the man. A woman who falsely accuses a man of rape (or assault) should be driven out of the feminist community and laughed at. Because they are awful people who only hurt actual victims.

Though as anon said, you can be mistaken and accidentally accuse the wrong person. Which is why people ought to avoid calling either party a liar without convincing evidence.

...but, yeah, if a woman is conclusively proven to be purposefully lying about an accusation, she should be roundly and loudly denounced by feminists.

3. I would not expect someone to throw himself completely under the bus for the sake of "justice". If I did it wouldn't be justice.
