Cyclists have no inherent right to the road. Get in a car or get out of the way.

Nope.

Yup. If you're in a major conurbation like NYC or the like with lots of stop and go traffic, I can accept that it might be faster to take a bike than a car (especially if you need to cover a relatively short distance that's just outside of walkable) and that's fine. But I don't live in NYC. Traffic is normal here. People on bikes just disrupt traffic.

Well, you have the right to hold that opinion but remember that the law is not on your side.

I'm well aware. I also happen to not care. If some dumb cyclist crashes into my car because he wasn't fucking paying attention and going too slow for the traffic, it's me who gets in trouble. That ain't right.

IMO the best way to promote bicycle safety is to stop people from riding bikes.

Or use sustrans's NCN if you live in the UK. (also the amount of twats that cycle on the pavement and not on the cycle path RIGHT NEXT TO THEM....)

Same with the Trans-Canada Trail.

I don't mind sharing the road, but I firmly believe anyone riding in the street - even if not motirized - should follow traffic laws (there's a stop sign? FUCKING STOP) and yield to pedestrians (cars are inarguably more deadly, but an adult on a speeding bike still poses a serious danger to people on foot and unlike a car they can't hear you coming).

Re: Strong opinions

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-06-13 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
For every actual bike person who can manage inner city traffic (and there aren't many, btw) there is some fucking cyclist going three in spandex refusing to signal and screaming SHARE THE ROAD! But if they smash into my car and die, I'm the one who gets in legal trouble for it. Fuck these people.

Now, theoretically, I might be okay with bike people sharing city traffic if:

A) they are required to carry insurance
2) they are required to carry a license
and D) they pass a fitness test wherein they have to do a slalom at 35 mph with volleyballs being fired at them from air cannons for a minimum of 100 feet. If they can manage that, I'll share a road with them.

My issue with cyclists who want it both ways. They want cars to treat them like cars, but then they don't follow the rules of the road. They run red lights as I'm trying to cross on a walk sign.

Also cyclists on sidewalks who nearly hit or actually hit pedestrians.

Also cyclists on sidewalks who nearly hit or actually hit pedestrians.

As a pedestrian in one of Germany's old university towns I used to say that all cyclists are both potential murderers and potentially suicidal. There were so many on the streets and pavements, and they were so careless about any kind of rules.

Re: Strong opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a deaf pedestrian who's been in pedestrian vs. bike accidents precisely twice in my life (no major injuries either time, fortunately) due to the fault of the cyclists, I don't want them on the sidewalks, either, thanks.

...See these things hanging off my ears? YELLING AND RINGING YOUR STUPID BELL IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR IS NOT GOING TO HAVE ANY EFFECT AS YOU CONTINUE ON AT FULL SPEED AND EVENTUALLY PLOW INTO ME AT 20KPH.

Ahem. Yeah.

Oh, trust me, I don't want them on the road or the sidewalk. I want them to put their little shorts away and get a fucking car already.

Unless America at some point becomes a lot better at the whole major infrastructure redesign thing I don't really think cyclists can share the road.

Agreed. Where I live it's 100% legal for cyclists to use the sidewalk everywhere except in a small part of downtown and then they all insist on riding in the street anyway.

Of course it's not an inherent right. It's a statutory right. Keep your shirt on and stay out of my marked lane.

Wow, you really can be an ass. People have been saying, "Dethtoll is horrible," and I didn't see it. But yeah, you're just flat wrong on this one.

Bikes are beautiful, because they use significantly less energy to move human body for commuting purposes. That's why urban planning in many countries tends to be highly bike friendly. They're cheaper and less polluting.

Cars are useful for carrying things, but if there's one road, there are going to be bikes on it.

I have family in SW Ohio, near Oxford, and I remember those little country highways, and I wouldn't relish biking them, personally. But I have ridden a bike for transportation other kind of dodgy places, so I can see it. I certainly don't begrudge bicycle enthusiasts biking from place to place instead of going around in a loop like a racecar driver.

I'm pretty happy that they have to at least follow the same basic traffic rules where I live as everyone else. Not that they do, but if they cross a red light and get into an accident, the law is not automatically on their side.
I absolutely agree that cyclists should have to get a driver's license if they want to move on public roads, complete with theoretical and practical tests.

It's not just a problem in the city - I live in a rural area and have to drive down a mountain road through a large forest to get to the city and as soon as it's warm enough, there are tons of cyclists on that road who play Tour de France, complete with riding in the slipstream of other cyclists. And it's really blocking the roads a lot. Combined with the problem of bikers who use that road as their private race track, it's fucking dangerous driving there, especially during summer. We get at least 5 fatal accidents (not to mention all the serious injuries) on that road every summer.

Re: Strong opinions

As someone who designs roads for a living, everyone saying "all places should have bike lanes!" need to SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY.
