Apart from other, good reasons (money, time, space, availability of hardware/software where I live), I'm not as into video games as I'd like because growing up, my parents didn't "get" them as a medium.

They didn't ban me from playing, but as I grew older I tried to avoid them because I knew they thought they were trivial, even though I disagreed.

I might have even pursued a gaming-related career if I hadn't been tiptoeing around that. I just want to casually enjoy more games, but I feel like I'll end up unsatisfied by my late start anyway.

I don't aaaaangst about it, I just fondly watch the boats I never got onto sail into the sunset.

I didn't play any video games until I was in my forties. I never had the money to play the video games back then, and for years as an adult I didn't even have a computer or any means to learn gaming, modding, design, etc.

Now I do this all the time. Don't let age stop you.

Hey, I didn't start playing VG til I was 40. And I enjoy the hell out of them, so you might too.

If you want to try a classic fantasy-type MMORPG I suggest Rift. Free, with beautiful graphics and lighter on the T&A aspect than some other games.

Maybe try computer games? They are cheaper than console games these days and there are so many different genres that each offer their share of casual titles.

There are many free titles too.

I didn't watch teen comedy shows like "Clarissa Explains it All" because my mom always threw a fit over how stupid they were, but now that I'm an adult I watch whatever the fuck I want including stupid kid's shows and if I enjoy them, great. And, if I don't, well, at least I can turn them off.

Someone reccomended PC games, so maybe try that first? The only game I play on PC is the Sims, so unless you are into that, maybe look else where for recs.

It is never too late to start gaming. (Just like it is never too late to decide to get into comics, or tv, or movies, or music, etc.) If you're interested and have the resources then you should give it a go!

Plus, a lot of the games you might've been interested in back then might be easily found and free or cheap now. (Either by ROMS, online shopping, etc.)

PC gaming is probably your cheapest bet, but there are certainly consoles out there with large collections as well. (Some of which are excellent.)

No pressure of course, but if the only thing stopping you is "you might be disappointed"...well, you might not! (And there's so many genres to choose from, so I imagine you can find something to suit your tastes.)

It's never too late! Figure out what you like and don't feel pressured to play on higher difficulties (though some games are gonna be hard no matter what -- I'm playing XCOM for the first time on Easy and while it's been pretty light so far I'm waiting for the game to inevitably turn on me.)

And I agree that PC gaming is the A number 1 cheapest route to go. Steam has boatloads of sales, including one going on right now. Buy yourself a decent gamepad and aside from modern games that play best on them (Dark Souls, Prototype, among others -- technically console ports, you understand) you have 20-30 years of emulated console games at your fingertips (older systems like the SNES are a snap to set up emulators for -- newer ones like the PS2 take a little bit of work.) It's super easy to get old PC games, too -- gog.com has tons of them for cheap, Steam has a few of their own, and of course there's always less-legal methods of acquisition (sometimes it's a gray area where a game isn't sold anymore.)

And if you go get Left4Dead off Steam hit me up, I'll play with you. :) It's a good crash course in learning to play FPS games.

Thanks, all your responses have been really encouraging! PC gaming is definitely my priority, I'll check out the titles you mentioned when I can. It's heartening to hear that maybe I can manage a late start even to things like modding. It's great that you could!

That's so good to see. Have fun, OP! :)

That's kind of a weird reason to not to have played games. My parents banned games so I bought consoles in secret, hid them, and pulled them out in the middle of the night to play. If you wanted to play them, you would have already.

It sounds like you're just not really into playing videogames... which is no big deal. You don't HAVE to do it. Going outside for a jog or something is probably more productive, anyway.

I shamelessly played games, both my own and my friends', until an age when I was embarrassed by my parents' very mild disapproval. I decided it was better to feign loss of interest in front of everyone from then on. I was an overly-sensitive kid in some ways when it came to my parents' approval.

But I agree with it being no big deal whether or not I start getting into them again. I plan to, but if it doesn't work out for whatever reason, then that's just how it is.

I never got into gaming in my childhood/teens because my family couldn't afford the equipment. There was a Nintendo 64 some time in the 90s, and my brother's computer somewhere during that time as well, but even the little I was able to play, I was never good at most games.

Even now I don't play a lot of games but what I do, I play on computer (though I play Tetris on my 3DS), where I can cheat like all hell.

BTW, I recommend the Sims, and Bioware games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
