Canon Couples You Would Have Liked If They'd Been Handled Better

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any canon couples that you would have liked more if their relationship had been written differently? If so, how would you have liked to see their relationship written?

Lupin and Tonks

- they don't die
- Lupin isn't awful
- lots of fluff about them

Man I adore Tonks/Lupin, like it's my HP OTP but jeeze, it wasn't written well in the last book and seemed all over the place and then they died. It was just, idk, eh? But yeah kind of forever living in denial where they lived and got to raise Teddy together and had happy lives.

I always found it hilarious (read: annoying) that people blamed Tonks for Remus being so... Remus. Of course it was usually from a shippy standpoint, but still, it was on him. And I mean, I love Remus as a character and I see why he was the way he was, I think we saw hints of it in PoA (but maybe didn't want to), but... that doesn't make him a good husband. I still like them, but only if I pretend their plotline in DH didn't happen.

Bones/Booth. Cuddy/House.

I hated how contrived and predictable they both felt. Which makes sense because I think both pairings were made canon when the shows were running out of ideas.

I hate when shows go there with the main male/main female as a way to get people to continue watching.

Especially on shows where the two really would not make for a good relationship and/or made for a better friendship. Cuddy/House never should have happened because you can't expect HOUSE to be able to function in a relationship of that level.

Spock/Uhura

Spock's one of those characters where I really feel, given all his emotional hangups, you really do need to show them falling in love and him getting over that.

Otherwise it just feels forced.

Harry/Ginny

I liked Ginny a lot in the fifth book but in the sixth I felt like Rowling was beating it into our head how awesome she was and then she just disappears for the seventh.

Katara/Aang

Now, I actually really do love this couple, but I wish more focus had been paid to Katara's feelings. I felt it was a bit too Aang-heavy at times.

Bruce/Natasha

They're cute but...I really hate how the love story basically BECAME Natasha's story in AoU. There are so many other things I'd rather explore about her and I didn't like how the rest of the Avengers were used to prop them up. I felt it was cheap and lazy. Steve, Nick Fury, Clint's wife -- they all felt so artificial in their support.

Worf/Troi. And Worf/Jadzia too. Both for the same reason. I'd have liked Worf to be with someone competent. Not Counseller Wild Guess and not Candy Crack Vapid Cheerleader Asshole From Hell I Cheered When Dukat Killed Her That Was Awesome.

I really don't like Amy/Jake so far in b99. I like their friendship but I feel like they're TOO immature in regards to their feelings for one another.

The relationship hasn't fully come together yet so I'm not going to completely judge, but I was against them getting together and was disappointed by it happening in the finale.

Sophie and Rupert in the Montmaray Journals. I feel bad even saying this because no one ships them so saying that how they got together was badly done feels like a betrayal, but...IT WAS SO BAD. To be fair, a lot of that book was less than ideal -- it was both too rushed and too slow. And there were a lot of lovely moments between Sophie and Rupert (their interaction at the funeral, especially), but their actual romantic relationship came so late in the book that it felt like a mess.

And I'm still mad we didn't get Toby gloating about it.

I could have liked Makorra if it wasn't such a fuck up from the very beginning. Same with Masami, I quite liked that until the makorra kiss and it all went to shit then kept going downhill because holyhell Mako you thick stupid idiot.

Scott Summers / Jean Grey.

Ashleigh/Ethan from Scion

Every time they meet, Ethan's in the middle of something else that I am way more invested in and what to see him focus on. If they had met where she isn't hijacking those storylines, I would be better able to appreciate their growing relationship.

Also, I didn't care for the Lesser Races storyline so their connection over that didn't really click with me. And, once they found Sanctuary, it seems like Ashleigh's drive disappears.

I think if Ashleigh had been a little more developed and we followed her more/got to know her better and there was something beyond the Lesser Races to connect them, I would have like them more.

Forever mad about Sylar/Elle on "Heroes." The writers couldn't decide if they were the psychopathic, straight-up murderers they were when introduced on the show, or if they were the woobies like in the flashback where they first met, or if they seriously wanted to redeem themselves and become heroes instead of villains. Kristen Bell & Zachary Quinto were hella fun to watch together, but when their storyline went from Sylar literally dying for Elle to Sylar killing Elle himself half an hour later*, I couldn't stop rolling my eyes.

...Then again, I'm talking about "Heroes," AKA, "Wasted Potential: The Series."

*I'm not kidding, that happened in ONE episode. ONE.

Naruto/Hinata tbh.

I didn't ship any of the main trio with anyone but I've heard about The Last just puts me off the pairing. Having her younger sister kidnapped just so they could spend enough time together to become a couple just bothers me.

Does a canon couple I loved until they were written a certain way count? If so, Remus/Tonks from Harry Potter. I shipped them before they were canon. Then in DH, they went Twilight before Twilight was a thing.

I think in retrospect, JKR would've been better off writing them like she did Bill and Fleur - giving them a subtle yet still very present love story in the background.

To beat a dead horse with the ATLA couples, Mai/Zuko.

I really do like them as a couple/idea of a couple, but my god the execution. They had a grand total of one flashback of Mai blushing, and then BOOM. Third season premiere they're making out. Their actual "story" got regulated to the one Enter the Fire Nation comic and then also a stone he used to carry around? Supposedly?

Zuko leaving her a breakup scroll and then their next interaction in the prison was great though.

Mindy/Danny on The Mindy Project.

The trajectory of their relationship is really annoying, especially the pregnancy.

Harry/Ginny. I liked the idea of them, and unlike Ron/Hermione that never would have worked for me, it could have worked for me if it had been written differently.

Doctor/Rose. I could have shipped it, maybe, if it weren't portrayed as "true love" and pushed so hard. And also if Eccleston had stuck around maybe.

Gamora/Peter. I loved the movie, but this ship didn't work for me at all. I came out of the movie shipping other things.

Then there are the ones I did ship until canon ruined them: mostly Booth/Brennan and House/Cuddy.

HIMYM series finale spoilers.

Ted/Robin from HIMYM. They were kind of cute through about halfway through season 2, but their breakup over their different goals in life was very believable. Even then, for a few seasons I could have bought the distant finale where they get together after Ted's wife dies and his kids are all grown, but their efforts to keep us from forgetting the couple just made them seem like the worst couple ever. Why in the hell would Robin want to hook up with somebody who was that aggressively disrespectful of her own desires in life?

Her romance and compatibility with Barney just compounded the problem.

Booth/Brennan. She was written dumb half the time to give him an "I told you so."

Eleven/River. I'm just finishing up a rewatch of seasons 5-7. TBH, I still do ship them despite myself, but I pretty much have to willfully ignore most of season six to do that. I wish that wasn't the case. :(

Several Harry Potter pairings have been mentioned in this thread, and I agree with all of them. Rowling writes great friendships but seems to fall apart on the romances. I like the pairings she sets up throughout the series, but actually reading the romantic parts is...bleh.

Hook/Emma, which has the dubious distinction of being my first and only NOTP in 20+ years of being a fan, and Regina/Robin.

Hook should've had a whole season to work with the white hats before gradually realizing he admired Emma for her willingness to help others and stand up for people weaker than herself. He could've realized she reminded him of Liam. He could've been ashamed of what he'd done in pursuit of revenge and changed not to "win" Emma, but because he wasn't worthy of her. When Neal died, he could've been ashamed that part of him was relieved because the competition was gone. And Emma would never brush aside his past as though it didn't matter. She should've been very prickly to Hook, not because "she was afraid of the depth of her feelings for him" or whatever bullshit, but because he'd very recently been a viscious scumbag opportunistic murderer.

Robin could have opened Regina's eyes to how she hurt the common people that he'd sworn to protect, and Regina could've wanted to make amends, as much as she could, for what she'd done as the Evil Queen, but had her offers to help people rebuffed because, well, Evil Queen, and the former peasants want nothing to do with her. And then Robin could've vouched for her, so Regina would stay on her best behavior so Robin wouldn't end up with his head on the chopping block for taking her side.

(And I'm pissed about Belle and Rumple not because of any specific canon event, but because they weren't allowed to fucking react to any of it like normal people. I love them in fanon, but in canon, they don't have a relationship, even a disfunctional one, they have a series of soundbites.)

Sasuke and Sakura if Sasuke had been less of a pointless dick.
