I will never get this. You can be funny without resorting to racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. If you have to rely on that, then you're a shitty comedian.

But but but free speech! And those damn unappreciative SJWs who don't know what's good, i.e. humor that was not even edgy in the 90s!

Ha, just kidding. I agree completely.

True. But in this atmosphere, everything, EVERYTHING can and is being twisted into being "offensive."

Yes, there is offensive stuff out there. But to the "nth" degree most college kids/tumblr users/"enlightened" 20 somethings will lead you to believe.

I don't know why some people act like it's so hard to respond to someone saying you're being offensive with "I disagree". They act like a small group of people making a bad argument will brand a person a bigot for life, but that's just not how it usually goes. You can find examples of people being punished based on something that seems petty but I really don't think that's the majority of cases. Why does it matter so much if a few people decide that a joke you make is offensive?

I'll add a caveat that it's different if we're going to talk about things like death threats that will get targeted at some of these people by assholes. I'm against that no matter who is sending or receiving them. But I'm just referring to people acting like something they say being considered offensive is a disaster in itself.

But you can't ignore the death threats because that has become a social norm. Because it used to be when you were offended, you would either write a letter to an editor or the network or talk among your friends and colleagues about how offensive something is. These days, when people find something "offensive," they try to destroy the people they find offending. Doxxing being one way. Calling up their bosses to get them fired. Spreading their name across the internet in a way to get globally shunned for whatever reason. Even making death threats, like you said, and worse case scenario, drive them to suicide.

It has become evil.

I can see people putting up a shield to protect themselves from this. So, the moment someone says, "I am offended," up goes the armor because they don't know how this offended person will react in the long run.

I think you're generalizing too much. I don't assume every person who says something homophobic is going to beat me and I don't think someone who is told they said something homophobic should assume that the ones telling them that are going to try to destroy their lives.

These days, when people find something "offensive," they try to destroy the people they find offending.

I don't think this is the norm. It's more common than it should be but I still come across way more people condemning it than supporting it.

This kind of hateful behavior isn't an inevitable extension of saying something is offensive. It's something that people do for all kinds of reasons, SJ stuff just being one excuse for some of them.

Homeless people who don't have a home, never mind a garden. Check your privilege!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
If that's a joke, I don't get it. So maybe it's an offense against comedy?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to print this comment and frame it. 100% agree

ew, ew, ew, NO.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only offended by how unfunny this is

is there anyone who enjoys humor that sounds like an edgy middle schooler wrote it?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I often laugh at fart humor but that joke reminded me of the dead baby jokes at girl scout camp. It wasn't so much funny as it was about dumb kids trying to shock one another with their limited knowledge and life experience.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
From that quote, I'm not sure that's what he's saying. I think it's more like, if you're in a job where you have to come up with new material and do a lot of brainstorming frequently and your job is about entertaining people rather than making them cold/angry at you, the fear of coming off as racist/sexist/etc. can make you self-censor during the brainstorming process, which will hurt the quality of your work. I don't think he's saying literally he can't come up with any jokes that aren't offensive, but that an atmosphere that causes people to think of certain topics as definitely "off the table" makes the creative process harder. (I'm not sure if that's actually the case, but that seems more like what he means in that quote.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh! A sensible comment! quick, let's catch it, put it in a cage and feed it. If we find another, maybe we could breed it!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a very odd idea of what is "sensible". "Pandering" would be my choice.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really inclined to be sympathetic that a millionaire is finding it a little harder to do his non-essential job because telling racist, misogynist or bigoted jokes is far less effort.
