Why the hell would Seinfeld be doing gigs at colleges, anyway? Most of the people there were probably born after his show went off the air, it's no wonder he can't relate to them at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But Seinfeld still airs like 20 times a day every day.

It isn't just old, white guys who think that. One comedian I can think of is Chris Rock. He also avoids colleges because students these days seem to be addicted to being offended.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you read the student open letter that proved Seinfeld's point?

It was priceless.

Exactly. I've been hearing this across the board in the comedy circuit. College shows used to be many comedians' bread and butter but not any more. There seems to be a growing trend among students to find things in general and twist them into being offensive and post about them. Almost in a way to get cool "victim" points. It's almost a "if you are not complaining, you are part of the problem and we will write about you" bullying schtick.

Oh lol. My fiancé tried to tell me about this and I didn't even want to hear it because he likes to bust my balls for being to "PC." Like, sorry I don't really tolerate sexist/racist/transphobic/homophobic/other shitty behavior?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm wary of people who use that term now because that's almost always what they mean: they're annoyed or inconvenienced by my lack of approval for their racist, bigoted, etc. jokes. Boo fucking hoo.

(Anonymous) - 2015-06-18 23:12 (UTC) - Expand

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god. Another guy like that. My dad is like that to my mom sometimes, but in a kind of mean way, deliberately prodding her by making jokes he knows makes her uncomfortable. For example, being assy about those kidnapped Nigerian girls, because he knows stuff about kids in danger gets to her. That way he can keep poking her with the joke, until she reacts, then when she expresses discomfort with it, he can lecture her about how people (AKA men like him) "aren't allowed" to makes jokes or talk about certain things. Except he obviously is, since he just did. But the implication is that she is on the side of the oppressors. It's her DUTY to laugh, and her silly feminine/maternal weakness is preventing her from doing her duty to assist him in he act of rebellion against "them." Because "they" totally care what some middle aged guy says to his wife in private. He's practically starting his own revolution! But my mom knows better that to disagree with anything he says too strongly. She has to agree to keep the peace, and she's already rocked the boat by not laughing when she was "supposed to" (except she wasn't ACTUALLY supposed to laugh, because the whole point was to make her uncomfortable and then rant and lecture at her FOR being uncomfortable and not laughing. So she's done exactly what he wants her to do, and will suffer the consequences for).

I''m guessing your fiance probably isn't the person sexist/racist/homophobic/transphobic behavior is ever aimed at). It doesn't affect him, so it's all a big joke, and if the butts of the jokes don't act laugh at it like it doesn't affect them either, they're oppressing him because he's entitled to their (and your) approval as their (and your) obvious superior

Never liked Seinfeld. This secret isn't surprising either, considering that aside from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nearly everyone involved with it has come out with some ridiculous racist/sexist/anti-PC sentiment after it ended.

I kind of hope it never happens for her though, since she seemed like the only good thing about that show.

Have you seen the shit coming out of colleges today? They are too PC. I've never seen a group of people who wanted to be offended over EVERYTHING outside of Tumblr.

Some things considered offensive on college campuses: Taco bars, the phrase "America is the land of opportunity", using a suspect's race in crime alerts (ex. Be on the lookout for a black male wearing...), a statue of a man talking to a woman, Chik-Fil-A shirts, the name "walk-only zones", and making fun of presidents.

(Though I think there's a difference between a blatant racist joke and one that's framed so you're laughing AT the racist, not agreeing with him/her.)

Kind of funny, considering one of the big things I've seen recently about the church mass shooting has been people who knew him saying "Oh yeah, he used to make racist jokes all the time. We always laughed them off because, hey, they're just jokes? I never realized he was being serious."

How many churches have those overly PC college kids shot up over being offended?

I definitely don't agree with the people who think you shouldn't ever be allowed to make jokes about sensitive subjects. Even the darkest, most hurtful subjects can have some humor in them and sometimes you need that to get past it.

But I also think it's ridiculous to say that PC culture is killing comedy or to point fingers at people who do honestly think a lot of those sorts of jokes are offensive. A lot of those sorts of jokes are probably more hurtful than funny and it's important to talk about why that is and where to draw lines.

There are two valid perspectives going on here and it would be super if people could sit down and talk about it like adults instead of pointing fingers and arguing out who's ruining what.

The problem isn't "this comedian told a joke about a sensitive subject! SHAME." or "young people are RUINING OUR CAREERS by being so easily offended!" Lots of comedians tell jokes about sensitive subjects and get masses of fans for it. Because they're actually funny.

"Tired old stereotype about this gender/ethnic group/religion/whatever I'm not a part of, amirite? Wink wink! I'm such a bad boy!" isn't funny. It's annoying and boring and stupid. It heaps insult on top of people suffering from injury. It's not courageous either - it's not speaking truth to power, it's sucking up to power, which is even more annoying.

Go learn from comedians who are actually doing funny routines about sensitive subjects, or resign yourself to playing to roomfuls of aging, fearful white males for the rest of your career.

So what he's saying is he doesn't want to do college tours anymore because the kids don't find his jokes funny?

I mean... sure, that sucks if it's what you're used to doing, but if your jokes aren't making them laugh, it doesn't matter if it's because "they're too PC" or "Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor" or you just stopped trying or whatever. If you're not funny to them, that's YOUR problem. No use whining about it.
