Casuals vs Hardcore

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-06-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
And the daily grind that is some games!

What's your POV? I consider myself casual. I generally just want to play the game and I hate hate haaate if too many aspects in the game are just grinding for hours on end. It's boring. Particularly baffled that self claimed hardcore gamers call it a challenge? Not hard though just a time sink.

Casual in some cases (open world games mostly) and hardcore in others (some MP FPS's)

One plays games, the other tells people they're playing games wrong.

I'm honestly not sure? I do like playing on harder difficulties and trying on different strategies and I do like to discuss game-mechanics just as much as I do the plot, but I really don't think that qualifies. I'm really not a fan of grinding nor researching builds (and I hate hate hate people who think there's only one true build and if you don't follow that to a T you're obviously a noob). So idk.

Casual. I was in a raiding guild back in the day but I stopped playing for about a year. I've gotten back into WoW and raiding, but I am definitely more casual about it.

I don't think that's the actual meaning of hardcore rather than casual? Historically it was used to dismiss facebook esque socially media driven simplisitc games (infamous for grinding), and has now come to refer to games like Dark Souls drawing from arcade style difficulty based on knowledge of the mechanics and quick twitch reactions.

I don't want to align myself with anyone who calls themselves a core gamer, but I play enough video games to not really be considered a casual gamer, I guess.

Hella casual. Like Sims 2 casual. I have Sims 3 & 4, but I've gone back to 2 for the nostalgia and simplicity. The only other games I play are Fallout 3 and Fallout NV, but it's been a while.

Probably casual? I mean, I play a lot of video games, but I use walkthroughs like 90% of the time because I don't have the patience to figure some shit out for myself and like to get as much done as possible, haha. I also hate choosing anything but the easiest settings, whenever that's an option.

I guess more casualk in te sense that I do pla more or the story and don't insist doig it on hard.nightmare mode or whatever.

Then on the other hand I am a completionist - yeah, I must do all the side quests!

I'm not sure what the definitions are tbh. I don't play as many games as I like, but I still love gaming and play the ones I own over and over. While I might not constantly be buying new games, I consider it my main hobby. I have definitely done my fair share of grinding in games and am pretty OCD about completing quests, etc; I spend way too much time in Fallout going through every trashcan and desk looking for ammo and bottlecaps.

BUT I don't usually play on harder difficulties, and while I love unlocking achievements and work towards them, I won't work obsessively for them either.

So take that for what you will.

Used to be hardcore, finishing a game to 100% what with sidequests and master items and collection stuff. I turned a lot more casual as soon as I hit college. Every so often I'll replay a favorite and because of my familiarity with the combat controls be able to breeze through without really any grinding.

Like you I just can't justify the time sink anymore. In general - and I think part of this is the rise of streaming as a new easily-accessible content provider - I've made the switch over to watching shows/movies while simultaneously working on some craft project. And any mobile games I play are now educational ones.

Idk somewhere in between the two maybe? Like I've got some games that I will max out 100% and get everything I can on and others where I just want to finish it once and be done with it(even if I do really enjoy it).

I always make my Sims experts in most skills and am building my second Skyrim house right now, so I don't mind grinding, lol. Making hundreds of nails and iron fittings by hand is fun! I'm a lot more put out by really long, buggy, plain old nuisance quests, which Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls in general have plenty of, but the Dawnguard expansion was especially bad for that. I just found the whole thing endlessly annoying, especially Serana's tendency to crawl up your ass every five seconds. It's like they were purposely trying to see how boring vampires could be, too. I've never gotten more enjoyment out of unclicking a data file than I did with Dawnguard, hahaha.

Hardcore. I like to 100% games when I can, I often do at least one playthrough of a game on the highest difficulty level, I collect achievements and shit like that, I watch Let's Plays, I keep up on gaming news and lurk various gaming communities...

In terms of hours spent, my top five timesinks are probably...
Minecraft - idek some ungodly amount
Skyrim - more than 1k hours
Final Fantasy 7 - 400-something across seven playthroughs
Dragon Age: Inquisition - nearing 300
Morrowind - 234 hours

Casual. Though I do group up for LFR in WoW on the weekends and same goes for dungeons and flashpoints in SWTOR.

It's why I bristle at the hardcore raiders in WoW who kep asking Blizzard to get rid of LFR. Which is also, why I think, that this expac's LFR is so...neutered. MoP was awesome, fun, and you got a tier set recolor that was pretty. This expac? LFR peeps get a meh looking set that isn't any kind of tier set.

Hardcore, I guess. When I really like a game, I'll play it on the hardest difficulty I can manage, I'll experiment with highly specialized character builds, and I can get pretty salty if I'm in a multiplayer game and I'm not performing as well as I think I should. And I like arcade shooters, which generally punish mistakes by serving you a game over instantly. I mean, I don't play them well, but I enjoy the challenge anyway.

But most games I just play, enjoy them at their default difficulty, and I don't obsess over completion, side quests, or achievements.

Whole argument is fucking stupid. If you play games you play games, what does it matter how much or what kind? I like to play a lot of games on easy (XCOM is one because I'm terrible at strategy) but I also love the shit out of Dark Souls. I like a lot of older games that are a bit more fiddly than the more polished and user-friendly experiences of modern games, but I play plenty of modern games too. I like Fallout 1 and I like Fallout 3. Am I casual or hardcore? Who fucking cares? Apparently, "hardcore gamers" do but fuck 'em. I don't see the point in judging someone for not having the infinite patience to sit through some clunky D&D bullshit. "Hardcore gamers" should just be renamed "tryhard gamers." I don't know anyone else who's this concerned with "casual" and I find them solely responsible for this whole argument even still being a thing in 2015.

I do both. If it's a game I'm not overly familiar with I will play on casual to get the feel of the game. That way my mistakes aren't the end of world and it gives me the time to really learn the ins and outs of the game. I usually build myself up to the hardcore levels. Like in Fire Emblem Awakening I started on normal/casual and then finished a run through on Lunatic a couple weeks ago. I actually like grinding though probably because my first games were Final Fantasy 3 and 4. Grinding is relaxing for me. I notice I play a lot of games with grinding in it when I'm super stressed out.

Personally, I think people can play games however they want. The options are there for a reason. You bought the game so you should be allowed to play it in whatever way you feel most comfortable with. I wouldn't play on a difficulty level I'm not comfortable with just because someone told me to. That would just suck the joy out of a game in my opinion. I like that I have the option to play at whatever difficulty level I feel like playing at at any given time.

Well right now I'm playing Bravely Default finally. My husband couldn't find his copy. I found it a couple weeks ago and have been playing it. I'm trying to get all of the characters to have all the jobs maxed out. So I've done a decent amount of grinding to get there. I've been feeling stressed lately so lots of needless grinding to take my mind off of things.
