(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)I want to like them both but neither are relatable to me, as almost all the personal issues they face are ones manufactured by outside factors as opposed to flaws of their own and generally end up not being their fault
The only way I can like characters like Batman is when the story remembers how fucked up Batman is and does nod to how his issues come from within himself and his inability to get over his parents' death. It's tedious and the guy is crazy for holding onto it for so long but at least it's a flaw in the genius rich amazing wonderful godmode

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, as a general rule, I would say that moral dilemmas are *most* interesting when the character who's dealing with them is basically good.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)That's my main annoyance
I'm not saying good characters can't make drama, they can make great drama. They don't have to be evil to do that. But they have to be able to make mistakes and fuck up and have things be their fault and have the story recognize it as opposed to put on them to make them the heroic victim all the time

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)But I guess my other point is that I think great drama can come from basically external things. Of course that doesn't mean they have to be the heroic victim, I think they have to have some agency, but I just don't agree that the central driver of the drama has to be some flaw which they possess.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)I was talking about relatability, and how I can't relate to characters whose drama all comes from outside and is never their fault oh no
Drama existing is a totally different ball game

Although, actually, I'd say if anything I relate more to Steve's niceness and his ptsd than I do to say Tony or Thor or Natasha.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)I would bet I'd like them as people. Just not as characters for the above reason

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)So I'm pretty sure that if his movies didn't have great side characters, I'd find him bland, too!
