Favorite disabled characters?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-27 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As a disabled person, I like seeing disabled characters in media, especially when they're really cool (hell yeah Toph). Who are your favorites?

Toph

Maya Goldberg from Degrassi Junior High. Welp. I have now and truly dated myself, haven't I?

Rin is so great! I liked the track girl best myself, though I can't remember her name. <.<

Barbara Gordon, Matt Murdock and Charles Xavier. Gazelle from Kingsman was awesome too, though she didn't get all that much screentime.

Charles Xavier for me too, but only in the First Class movie, where his relevant disability is a major depressive episode. I kinda needed to see that at that time in my life.

Let's go classic: Monsieur Noirtier from The Count of Monte Cristo. Old and paralyzed, but by no means helpless.

Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road is pretty cool.

And then there's Hiccup and Toothless from the How to Train Your Dragon films. I love 'em both. <3 Though it took a little while for Hiccup to grow on me.

As far as older stuff goes, I've always been fond of Bedwyr/Sir Bedivere from Arthurian legend. I'm not sure if him being one-handed is consistent in all/most of the stories, but it appears enough that it has stuck for me as an identifying trait.

Furiosa is great!

Max, too - he has the leg brace (and if he makes it to old age, his hearing is going to be completely shot).

Toothless and Hiccup from HTTYD, Furiosa from Fury Road, and Gazelle from Kingsman(she was so cool and I really liked her).

Oh and Destiny from X-Men, she was pretty interesting and had a cool superpower and I am forever sad that she's been ignored in the movies.

Brandir the Lame from Silmarillion

He's the epitome of what I like in a character in general, and one of my favorites. I really wish he'd gotten even more vindication than he does in the narrative.

House, Geordi, Toph and Scootaloo. (yes, I've noticed they all have VERY different personalities from each other)

Oracle, hands down.

Sandman from Rise of the Guardians. Cheekiest and most badass character in the movie, and my favourite by a mile.

In terms of spymasters with missing eyes, I adore both Nick Fury from the MCU and Archangel from Airwolf. For spymasters/information specialists in general, add in Barbara Gordon as Oracle and Finch from Person of Interest. (I like spies and information specialists, okay?)

Eugenides from the Queen's Thief series, a thousand times. Most badass man in three kingdoms, on both physical and political playing fields, whether he currently has two hands or one. I madly adore him.

Also, in terms of one-handed kings, does Nuada Airgetlám count? Admittedly the silver prosthetic was magical and worked pretty much exactly like the real thing (and the later flesh-and-blood one by Miach, in the versions where Dian Cecht doesn't destroy it, even better again), but his maiming and subsequent gaining of his prosthesis were kind of important to the story. Plus, Nuada was just cool in general, and possibly the single most level-headed of the Tuatha de Danann in the entire mythological cycle.

Furiosa from Mad Max. HELL YEAH.

I rather like Eugene from GATTACA. He's such a bitter, snarky asshole. (Shame about the ending though, that came with some unfortunate implications.)

I also really like it when characters deal with mental trauma, and it's actually acknowledged as such and done well. But I can't think of any decent examples right now. Maaaaybe possible Tony Stark in IM3 and dealing with panic attacks. It was interesting to see a superhero deal with that.

I'm having trouble thinking of others. :/
There needs to be more disabled characters in media, dammit!

If Captain Picard is actually disabled because of his prosthetic heart, then him. If that's ridiculous, then Bobby Singer during his wheelchair season.

I actually have to say Toph too XD she's so badass.

In the vein of blind characters, I also have to say Terezi. And in the vein of Homestuck, I have to add Tavros. Those are two of my favs.

Ed Elric also! <3 Not sure the extent to which he counts as disabled since his prosthetic limbs are both extremely functional, but still.

Let's see, I like Damask from Polychrome Heroics, and Igor from Frankenstein's Family. Mindfuck from Empowered.

Kinda debatable, but Spike Stoker from the Thursday Next books. (Don't know WHAT that dude has, but it's SOMETHING.)

And Helen Potter from The Tale of One Bad Rat.

Gonna say Lincoln Rhyme from The Bone Collector. I've seen others I really enjoyed, but he's the only one who stuck with me beyond his movie. I recently rewatched the movie, though, and it's now a complete favorite. :)

Malik, from Assassin's Creed. (I adored him in the game, but also in how fandom has expanded on his story.)

Basically it's super refreshing imo to see an abled-bodied character lose an arm and be really fucking angry about it. He's not nice. He's not pleasant. And his badassitude is never overtly pointed out in-game with big flashing arrows saying 'look at how cool this guy is'. He's not there to be some sort of "lesson" to the player on how disabled people have value too.

Mr. Gold on Once Upon a Time is disabled without the help of magic, though he ends up with magic more often than not these days.
