Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is anyone else read of FS to adopt a "You pay your money you take your chance" approach to spoilers?

Trigger Warnings are absolutely necessary, but spoilers only serve to give the entitled brats something to whine about.

Anons here in particular are little babies about spoilers. Case has had that warning for years, it's not new that here there be spoilers.

Yeah, I agree actually,. I think we forget about the risk of spoilers, but it's inevitable it will happen sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. But you'll never get the majority to accept that it means they might have to slow down their reading, practice safer scrolling and take responsibility for their own selves.

It's so much easier to call people dicks and whine until everything gets its own individual spoiler warning.

Back when I was new to LJ, I didn't know how to use cuts, and I got yelled at by a friend even though the title of my post said "SPOILERS." So did the first line.

I mean, yes, I should've used a cut, but it's not like I didn't warn people they might want to scroll. My point is, you're right, people don't want to do that.

To clarify, you want FS to just go by the rule at the top of the page? As in, read at your own risk because there might be spoilers?

AFAIK this is already how it works. Case tries to put newer spoilers behind cuts as a courtesy, but anything older than a few months is fair game. Sure, a few anons have pitched a fit about it, but the rules are already pretty clear.

The GC should also be caveat lector for spoilers, dump the stupid rule about first posting. People are deliberately trying to get good threads dumped.

I come here expecting spoilers, so if there's something I'd like to avoid, I browse the posts carefully or just avoid this place on the day something is coming out.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about spoilers myself tbh but when posting threads in the general comments thread about the newest episode or whatever, I don't see what the big deal is about waiting til comments are collapsed.

Post a header and you spoilery comment in the next comment. Wait until there's been a few threads and the comments have collapsed. FS is slow, so I don't get the hurry.

I don't see what the big problem is in learning to scroll slower or learning to read selectively. Both are valid lifeskills, the latter especially so for many white collar jobs.

If it were up to me, I would not care about spoilers being posted. Or not posted. I don't give a shit. I don't care about reading spoilers but I'm not too lazy an ass to take five seconds to collapse a thread or put a warning up

I find lawyer anon more annoying than the spoiler rule. Who cares so damn much?

I don't care about spoilers for anything older than 3 months old.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I don't care about spoilers, but I don't like people being discourteous So I like the stringent spoiler rules we already have. it discourages people from being fuckheads, and lets us call out the people who are fuckheads.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I appreciate spoiler warnings in general, even on old stuff. I think it's common courtesy, personally. But then again, in a community where anonymous users generate the content, it's hard to expect everyone to play nice.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
which is why we have the rules letting us tell these people to go and eat shit.

Yep. Please just let the spoilers run free and prevent the bitching night after night.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagreed. This only teaches the babies who bitch about needing to do all that hard, hard, work of putting a warning that whining enough will get them their way.

I don't give a shit about spoilers or reading them but "give the crying babies what they want" is not the correct reason to take back the rule

Well I like spoiler warnings...when I put a spoiler warning on something I think of it as a courtesy. I don't always remember to, but I make an effort for those who care.

Then again, I am definitely one of those people who don't like spoilers for things I'm super passionate about. If I'm watching or playing or reading something that I have a more casual interest in then I don't mind all that much, but for the most part I prefer the element of surprise.

When I come to f!s though, I run with the assumption that I'm probably going to be spoiled. If I truly don't want to be spoiled about something, I try to stay away from here, tumblr and twitter.

Sometimes I manage (I did pretty well for Inquisition!), sometimes I don't.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You're in favor of TW?

Have you ever been badly spoiled for somthing you passionatly care about? I is the closest thing to rape that you can get without being touched. The feeling of shock, anger and pure violation is so intense.

Anything that helps this not happen is a good thing.

Re: Spoiler Wanrings

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like rape. That comparison falls very short.

Other that that, I agree with how spoilers are far more traumatic than these people seem to realise.

Why do a few words of warning and/or a collapsed thread bother you that much? Is it really that onerous? Once I, or anyone else, sees a spoiler, it cannot be unseen. I am good about letting my eyes unfocus when I see a fandom that I don't want to be spoiled about, but sometimes it is too late. (Spoilers for season four of BSG) Like when someone started a post with OMG, Kara died on BSG! How the hell am I supposed to miss that? I mean, I could have avoided the internet/my f-list as I hadn't seen the episode yet, but would it really have been that difficult for the person to put a spoiler warning first? No, it really wouldn't have been. And then I had someone like you purposely try to spoil me in a comment they left for me. How would I have known to not read the comment when I wasn't aware that they were going to spoil me? If it doesn't hurt you and it helps someone else, isn't that reason enough to want to do something? JFC, has courtesy gone away that much?

I AM EXISTS FOR A REASON, DAMNIT....

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
so how you take spoiler like? wank assumption or bluff inducing. well I know if someone could just roll spoiler like nobody business, but also,

CAME ON, CAN EVER BE BLOODY TO NOTICE [SUBJECT] AND COLLAPSED THE FUCKING THREAD OR THERE SOME PEOPLE ARE TO STUPID TO KNOW THE CONTENT OF SPOILER THAT THEY ARE SPOILING.
