About Dreamworks

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm OP

Not really a hardcore fan of Dreamworks. I only like a couple of their films. I was just using it as an example because while I only LOVE a few dreamworks films (like The Road to El Dorado) I have NEVER fallen in love with a Pixar film and I (personally, IMO) have never understood the hype. At best, I find their films decent.

IIRC, Pixar was a pioneer in the CGI film industry and as such they're always going to have an overwhelming amount of success and hype. They also have the $$$ and that undoubtedly also plays a role. Other studios tend to struggle very often and don't get the recognition for their films that they should get because Pixar and Disney stomp all over the competition with their long history.

DA

For example, Pixar has pioneered how to animate realistic looking 3-D hair. Their algorithms (some of which come from The Incredibles, IIRC), are now pretty much the industry standard.

The other movies that helped with animating 3-D hair were Monsters, Inc. and Monster U.

Well, I can tell you why I like many Pixar movies.

While I do think there is some overhyping of Pixar - part of which may be due to nostalgia and their pioneering effects and Steve Jobs and part of which I think is due to those people that like to be on the bandwagon (you know, like those people who go to parties not because they want to go, but because they don't want to miss anything and they want to be seen) - but a lot of people really do like the movies.

I like many of the characters, I think they are very relatable. And there's a real sweetness to the films that I enjoy. I don't care for a couple of them (Cars, Ratatouille) and don't want to see a few others, but I do like a great many of their feature-length films and most of their short films (even the scary baby one). I felt sorry for a lamp after it popped a ball.

If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you, but a lot of people do genuinely enjoy Pixar films.
