I don't think that Pixar are bad and I do enjoy most of their movies. I do tend to enjoy Dreamworks movies more, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dreamworks has some good films but they're far more likely to do goofy forgettable films with celebrity voice actors that are quickly forgotten whereas Pixar actually takes risks.

I mean ffs they did a movie with an old man as an Asian kid as the heroes where the biggest actor was Ed Asner.

I could watch Up, Wall-E, and Wreck it Ralph all day. Can't say that about any dream works. I like how to train your dragon, but not enough to quit driving my 8 year old crazy by actually figuring out which one is hiccup and which one is toothless.

I think both companies have made good movies and some meh ones. I prefer Dreamworks' films when they're not overdoing it with the pop culture references like in Shrek and Shark Tale (although I think the first Shrek was OK in that regard. The subsequent movies just got too much) and they strike a good balance between humour and poignancy. So I'd say that their movies have gotten better in that respect. There are some Pixar movies that I don't love nearly as much as everybody else (ie: The Incredibles. I liked it, didn't love it) but I find Pixar is great at having little moments that are emotional and visually impactful even if the rest of the movie might not be my cup of tea.

Slightly OT, and I know this isn't going to happen but I wish Dreamworks would pull a PatF and throw out one last 2D movie because I thought their 2D animated films were gorgeous. I found them to be prettier than Disney's by juuust a bit.

I love a lot of Pixar films but I love a lot of Dreamworks movies as well so idk which of the studios is my favourite tbh, I will say though that I really, really love a great many of Dreamworks older 2D movies, the animation itself is often beautiful to look at alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Pixar generate real emotional stakes in a way that Dreamworks just can't. Their films tend to be more sophisticated, both in structure and in substance; there's a lot more grey-on-grey. Several of their films do away with the whole protagonist-antagonist battle altogether (Finding Nemo, Inside Out, Wall-E) in favour of more complex discussions about aspects of the self.

Pixar often (not always, but frequently) give you something more substantial than The Hero's Journey. And substance counts.

I only like their short works. And A Bug's Life, I liked that ages ago. I'm not a fan of their style (the reason I haven't watch the Incredibles) and the plotlines tend to be forgettable. Is disliking Pixar the same as not getting Casablanca, and should be kept a secret, lol

Regardless of quality, Pixar definitely does something different. Take Ratatouille, for instance, which tries to make the audience understand and be interested in the artistic aspects of cooking. Most comparable works I can think of focus more on eating, a more "relatable" thing that every audience member has done.

Uh...Shrek 3 was weak, Antz wasn't that memorable nor that good, neither was Chicken Run. Shark Tale...eugh, Madagascar, same thing. Never was interested in Wallace and Gromit. Over the Hedge was bad, Flushed Away I never saw, but heard was mediocre. Bee Movie is universally panned, same with the Madagascar films to varying degrees. Monster vs. Aliens was ok. Puss in Boots never saw. Rise of the Guardians was boasted bigger than it actually was. The story was kind of weak, if a fun film, but ultimately, not that memorable. Turbo looked bad, The Croods was actually decent, if a bit weaksauce. Mr. Peabody and Sherman wasn't interesting to me, so I never saw it. And I honestly haven't heard much about Home, despite Tumblr's DEMANDS for people to go see it.

The only decent films I actually liked of theirs were the 2D animated films, Shreks 1, 2, and 4, the Kung Fu panda films, the HTTYD films, Megamind aaaaaand that's it.

Where as far as Pixar is concerned, I've liked most of their films and feel they were all pretty strong, even the weak ones, though there are a few I haven't seen.

Dreamworks may have more films than Pixar, but their quality is all over the place and more times than not, the quality is on the weakside of the spectrum. Pixar has teh strong films.

While I wouldn't say Dreamworks is necessarily superior, Pixar is way, way, WAY overhyped and has a lot of incredibly defensive fans. Disney and Pixar pretty much own the animated movie industry and they absolutely did not deserve all the awards and oscars they got. Dreamworks has definitely produced some good quality stuff (their 2D films especially). I've enjoyed more Pixar films than Dreamworks, but when it comes to Disney's CGI films I have always found them annoying and mediocre.

And as part of the ruling class of animation studios, Pixar is going to have the bigger budget and bigger slew of fans with nostalgia goggles whether they deserve it or not.

About Dreamworks

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm OP

Not really a hardcore fan of Dreamworks. I only like a couple of their films. I was just using it as an example because while I only LOVE a few dreamworks films (like The Road to El Dorado) I have NEVER fallen in love with a Pixar film and I (personally, IMO) have never understood the hype. At best, I find their films decent.

Honestly, I find that Dreamworks films are much more hit or miss in terms of quality. Sometimes you get Prince of Egypt or HTTYD. Sometimes you get Madagascar or Bee Movie. Personally, even if I'm not always the biggest fan of their movie, Pixar has a lot less bumpy record.

And, apparently Dreamwork going to focus more on younger kid demographic, which means more movies like Madagascar and Minions. : /

I agree that Pixar is overrated (they generally have solid storytelling but more then just Cars has fallen flat even in that area) but I would not agree that Dreamworks is better. Dreamworks has made some good films but they have made A LOT and I mean, A LOT of weak ones.

Dreamworks was a lot quicker to go for cash cow movies of little to no quality. Pixar is starting to go that way too (partially Disney's fault but the studio is just a mess in general now), but they did legitimately want to tell good stories for many years.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think Antz was WAY better and funnier than Bug's Life and I also liked Monsters vs. Aliens a lot. And I live in the SF bay area, which is Pixar country.

Eh, to each their own. I like some of Dreamworks films, but I mostly prefer Pixar. It's just a matter of personal preference, though I would argue that Dreamworks has made more bad movies than Pixar, and that their bad movies are worse than Pixar's bad movies. I will say that when Dreamworks gets it right, they really knock it out of the park, but I don't think that happens for them as often as it does for Pixar, as they tend to have stronger emotional stakes and rely less on pop culture references and catchphrases (which can be funny every now and then, but a little of that goes a long way). Again, though, that's just my opinion. Your Mileage May Vary and all that.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer Dreamworks to Pixar. I can't think of a single Pixar movie I've wanted to see more than once besides The Incredible, but there' several Dreamworks films on regular rotation.

This secret reminded me to check out Croods and Home. Both were a lot better than expected. I still thought Oh was basically Olaf only worse through the first quarter of the movie, but once it stopped focusing on him and on Tip instead it got much much better.

Croods was simple story but some amazing animation, probably because James Baxter was in charge!

Road to El Dorado, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, Rise of the Guardians, Galaxy Quest... Yeah, all stuff I really enjoy. I don't hate Pixar, I just kind of watch once and then that's it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a handful of pixar films I really love. But as a whole I agree that they're overrated. I just don't see how people can hold up just this one company when there are great animated films coming from all over.
