No shit that oughta stay secret.

I don't know what this is. Is he her Dad? Does OP want Samus to fuck her Dad?

Adam's her father figure. He's her commander in Metroid Other M and...kind of an asshole.

I still ship it 'cause I don't care how fucked up it is.

And because I kind of shipped it before playing the game...an M rated Metroid fic was actually the first porny thing I ever read when I was like 12 or 13. I still remember the fic too!

As you are aware of how horribly fucked up it is that is fine.

Not blood related but he did have a father-figure role.

Samus has traditionally been viewed as a strong, capable character who kicks ass -- one of the original strong female characters in video games dating back to the mid-80s. Other M made her into a creepy, weak, co-dependent weirdo who can barely do jackshit when this dude's involved.

Her going to get her killed dad figure.

Like seriously. This is a joke comic but this pretty much happens in game.

Samus has a lava proof suit. She can literally will it on with a thought. It carries no negative consequences to her whatsoever (She can keep it on indefinitely without additional power drain, it doesn't have any weaknesses the suit she's wearing has, etc.) SHE WAITS FOR THIS GUY TO TELL HER TO TURN ON HER SUIT. WHILE IN THE LAVA ROOM. THE LAVA WHICH IS FILLING UP THE ROOM. HE CAN LITERALLY SEE EVERYTHING GOING ON IN THE ROOM. HE KNOWS THERE IS FUCKING LAVA THERE.

Samus quit this organization that he's a high ranking officer in because she wanted to do things her own way. Somehow she has forgotten this part of her character and literally does whatever he says, and not until he says it, for most of this damn game. Either she has brain damage, he has some sort of moron inducing telepathy power that also affects him while he has it on (why wouldn't he want her to turn on the lava suit? She's doing stuff for him and he legit wants it done) That, or she really, really realllllly wants to fuck him. And all the blood that his brain used for common sense has gone to his dick.

I have feels about this games characterization. Negative feels.

What I understood from the game was that Samus was clearly traumatized from losing the Baby Metroid and so encountering people from her past -- Adam, especially -- wasn't particularly good for her mental health. He was clearly still upset with her for leaving the Federation and I always felt that this was Samus being stubborn as hell and trying to prove how tough she was because his opinion matters to her.

On Adam's end, he's monitoring everyone, so I think he wasn't aware of Samus being in that situation until he checked in on her. He was probably working with someone else until then.

Of course, the actual answer is that this is for gameplay related reasons -- it's meant to challenge the player.

But...yeah...that's my in-universe rationalization for it.

That is a lot of rationalization you got there. :P

He was clearly still upset with her for leaving

Which would've made sense if she left dramatically or because of some misconduct or going against his orders but NOPE, he's just pissed she left period.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's okay, because she left his command! With... no drama. Because his brother died. ...uh. Why is that bad again?* (That was why she left, right? My memory is rather fuzzy on this.)

Not to mention, and I'm aware it's a small thing but it didn't help, SHE FRIGGIN SHRANK. She's been canonically taller than most men before but nooo can't be properly submissive if she isn't tiny.

*I know it's a thing in Japan along with her monotone voice being badass there, but still. Wtf?

Yeah this.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how ANGRY people get about this game.

Adam was an asshole, sure, but he was an an asshole towards EVERYONE. And I thought it made it interesting that he might not be very happy with Samus for leaving the Federation the way she did.

Plus, I don't know...I didn't mind Samus' behavior so much. Sure she was afraid, but she still powered through her fear and kicked ass. I don't know...to me, that almost makes her braver.

As for the whole "authorization" system, I thought it was pretty clear that, given that they're on a Federation vessel, Adam is in charge and has every right to kick Samus off the Bottle Ship if she won't toe the line.

Honestly the real problem with Samus' characterization is that it's a total 180 from what we've come to expect. Instead of being, you know, Samus... well, we got a co-dependent weirdo who defers to Adam not out of respect for his position but because his presence makes her a sniveling child.

It's fucked up.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get the sense that she was co-dependent, though. I mean, she doesn't need him to function. She just REALLY wants his approval. Which I understand that people don't want Samus to defer to anyone, but I don't really think it's general personality characteristic. Rather it's Samus wanting to prove herself.

Plus, I mean, even if she didn't respect Adam, she'd have to listen to him considering she's on a Federation vessel.

But see, that's the thing... the only thing she did was leave his command. Because of his brother's death and wanting to avoid causing trouble. He's basically unhappy that he was no longer able to order her around anymore.

Unfortunately the fear doesn't make sense because the game doesn't bother to explain why it only shows up NOW when she's faced the enemy 2-3 times before.

Er, not really? It's only outright said that she might cause collateral damage and kill people if she uses her weapons, so he'll tell her when she can use them... which doesn't explain why Samus isn't allowed to yse equipment that aren't weapons like, oh, the Varia suit.

Don't we all ship fucked up things on occasion? (Icon relevant.) I won't judge.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-10 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I fuckin hate Other M, it ruined so much shit. Also, I ship Samus with the AI version of this dude that appears in Metroid Fusion, at least that one wasn't nearly as much of an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-10 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone whose only exposure to Samus is from the Super Smash Bros games and a few articles written about her, can anyone tell me why Samus's portrayal in Other M is so awful? I know I'm opening up a can of worms here, but I was always under the impression that she had very little characterization pre-Other M, so I'm not quite sure why her Other M portrayal can "contradict" previous games. I realize this is a case of YMMV, but I don't see why her being deferential and submissive towards this one guy (Adam?) "ruins" her character, especially if he took a father-like role in her life. She can still be a badass, just with a more complex personality. I do realize I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who has little attachment to Samus, however.

And to the OP, don't feel bad! It's not like this is the first unhealthy ship in a fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for one, this "father-like role" is practically non-existent in the game, the story is terribly written and despite how little canon there was before they still manage to go against it. I recommend this essay:

http://moonbase.rydia.net/mental/blog/gaming/metroid-other-m-the-elephant/article.html

It's a long read, but it gives some good insight into the whole thing, like how the authorization is badly done, how Adam at no point acts fatherly at all, how her break down doesn't make sense - the monster that makes her break down? She's fought against it 2-3 times before and was totally fine then - and how unhealthy their relationship is.

Now, I fully agree that liking an unhealthy ship is A-OK! Buuut judging by the OP:s posts in the thread they're in deep denial about it being anything but slightly messed up.
