[Fire Emblem Fates]

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
lol wtf? I'm surprised I haven't heard about this on my dash yet, but at the same time I really don't want to be within a mile of that wankstorm

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, so I've never heard about this character (don't pay attention to Fire Emblem) but that sounds... really comprehensively terrible.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds a lot worse than it is. The game is brand new out in Japan, someone mistranslated a scene in an offensive light, and the false information has spread like wildfire faster than anyone could correct it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
How did they mistranslate it and how does it alter the situation

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It was mistranslated as forced gay conversion therapy so that the player's character could bang a lesbian.

What actually happens is the player's character gives slips magic powder in her drink so she can see everyone as a woman and not get thrown off in battle (she apparently loses concentration when she sees pretty women??). Soleil (the girl in the secret) actually runs with it because she likes the idea of seeing nothing but women, and then eventually falls in love with the player's character.

It's not much better, but not nearly as dramatic as what the mistranslation claimed.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
SA- also there was an issue regarding the last line of Soleil's proposal floating around, where she claims to end it with "Hey, wanna touch my chest?". Which is probably the most basic translation of the line that's actually supposed to read "My heart's racing... here, feel it.", or something more gentle/romantic.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
that still sounds dumb as hell

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
No one's really debating that part, it's the people trying to make a misinformed social justice stance out of it that's got the fandom rustled.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
This feels kind of convenient. "They're not offended because it's weirdly homophobic, they're offended because they don't understand!" This "correct translation" business doesn't seem like it changes the underlying problems.

So much for your claim of not having/wanting an opinion as you said in your secret.

That said, I don't have a horse in this race because I know Nintendo of America isn't going to let this support see the light of day.

This.

I care exactly nil about this "news" because when we see the official English localization the dialogue will be completely different to this one person's personal translation of the Japanese.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't even make sense? Seeing pretty women distracts her, so let's make her see nothing but women in battle so she will... not be distracted in battle? Wuh?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone in the situation reacts to it weird, even the character who gets the magic powder and thinks it's an awesome idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
They wanted her to get used to seeing pretty (and not so pretty) women everywhere because whenever he saw one she started flirting with them and got weak in the knee.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
She's bi tho.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
That seems like part of the problem, honestly. All this mess about how this character loves women, can't resist women, did I mention she loves women? And oh by the way, she loves men too, so we can hook her up with a man. But mostly she loves women. (I've even seen insistence she's straight.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Curb your biphobia, anon. Bi people can have preferences. Hers is apparently women. To frame bisexuality as "nothing but a way for men to fuck lesbians" is gross. She says she likes men too. So she is bi.

Yes I completely think that the Kamui support with her is bizarre and that she should've gotten at least one female S support. But there doesn't need to be biphobic bullshit pulled into this.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about this individual character, not every bisexual character ever written. It's like if Dorian from Dragon Age was a female-only love interest.

(BTW, it's kind of rich to be called biphobic on the same site where someone called me bisexual and said he wouldn't have thrown a screaming fit at me if he'd known sooner.)

"BTW, it's kind of rich to be called biphobic on the same site where someone called me bisexual and said he wouldn't have thrown a screaming fit at me if he'd known sooner"

because all anons who speak to you are a hivemind who should know who's said what to you specifically???

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
As a bi person, shut up. Excusing the common and gross fantasy of 'turning' a lesbian (which really seems to be more of a way to get a character who's sexual but a virgin at the same time since most of these people only count penis-sex as 'real' sex.) as "Well, she could be bi!" is just gross.

That's not what bisexuality is about at all, it does not represent it, and it's not cool that it's used to excuse that.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
But she is literally bi. I wish you people would stop mindlessly parroting the bullshit some idiot made up instead of thinking for yourself/doing your own research. The character is bi. There's no way around it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As another bi person, I get that there's this fantasy (there's a "turning gay men straight"-fantasy, too), but really, in my personal experience, preferring girls but then ending up with a guy long term is something that happens for real. I never knew I was attracted to guys before I met my husband, and I had a hard time coping with it because I wasn't sure if it wasn't just his androgyny (I took him for an FTM 1st time I met him) that made him attractive to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It does happen. But I think there's a pretty big difference between something that would be a character coming to terms with their own bisexuality from their POV.

And playing a character, who's the main character, who's response to hearing that a character is a lesbian is to go "I can fix it!"

Lots of things happen in reality that don't always make for good storytelling. I don't think "Lesbian who's willing to sleep with main character because he's somehow special" is very good bi representation.

It's been discussed a lot lately, but it's like a rape fantasy. Rape fantasies are healthy and common to have. But showing your main dude raping a woman into loving him in a video game and presenting it as 'well, it probably wasn't bad for her, lots of women secretly have rape fantasies' would be horrible!
