People really need to stop saying they're in fandoms when they mean they casually like things. Fandom implies you have a vested interest. Everyone likes things. Fandm's what sets certain fans apart.

SA - And for the record, I'm not saying casual fans aren't real fans, or that you have to write smutty fics to be in fandom. Just that having a Doctor Who icon and having mentioned the show once in a post in 2012 doesn't mean you're in the fandom.

Could be they're a lurker, not everyone contributes. I'm a fan of many things but I'm quite content to just talk about it IRL and only go OL to read things. Not EVERYONE finds being active in OL fandom appealing, hell not everyone has an active OL presence full stop.

AYRT - Yeah, but I mean people who say that they are involved in OL fandom but really aren't.

OP - I think my mistake was posting this in a rant thread, because it's not like I'm losing my shit over it. I also don't think I'm explaining well, but don't know how to explain it better.

Yeah, maybe start over and try to explain? Cause i'm a bit confused at what you're getting at.

Clarifying

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I think it might be me after all.

To me, fandom = being obsessed with something to the point at which you can talk about it for hours, where you have every character's name memorized, and where it does come up in LJ posts at least occasionally. You don't even have to write fic, just... be really really invested. Whereas people who never want to talk about the show or don't even seem to really be hugely into it are saying they're in the fandom. However, I'm thinking back to posts I've seen here, and that makes me think maybe fandom really isn't that anymore. It does just mean you really like something.

ayrt

i think you're right there, it's just what you like and are into and isn't just about that obsessive drive anymore. i guess you could call them casual fans, but then i know some hardcore fans you'd take as casual fans because no usual tells, they just watch or read about it with intensity.

being in fandom is more about liking something and behing in the community - including quiet consumers and lurkers. while casual fans might float around on the fringes or not be involved in the fandom at all.
then there's those hardcore fans who might just not be all that into OL presence - anons, keep changing usernames, just not interested in the OL side of fandom.

and of course, people express their interest in different ways ;) cosplay, writing, reading, watching/reading over and over, consuming and creating

I agree with you, actually! I'm not saying you can't be a hardcore fan and not be involved in fandom. I know hardcore fans of things who aren't in fandom, but trust me, they're hardcore fans.

I may just start a thread later, I didn't explain myself well.

Hmmm I totally get where you're coming from.

Okay so, I've been in lots of fandoms since the mid-90s, such as Sailor Moon, FF7 and Harry Potter.
I think those fandoms did a big number on me... I still love discussing about them, but I know better than to get into heated debates and so seek to avoid any conflicts. I have become a "casual fan". And you know what? I like it. I have an easier time navigating through various fandoms.
I'm just as big of a fan as before, I just don't obsess over it.

One thing I've also noticed that before I didn't really have that many stimulating conversations about stuff we were fans of with my few irl friends, and fandom was my escape for that. Things are different now. I don't feel the need to seek validation through fandoms anymore -- and I'm not implying that that's what fandoms are to people, but for me it was.

And yes, sometimes I'd rather not talk when I'm in the fandom, but I'm still happy to hear what others have to say.

I'm just happy to read good fics, and putting your fan-art on display is a lot easier when you're not a BNF.
