It's a cultural thing, a trope that's mostly used in shonen comics. Female characters get told to the readers they're dangerous. Male characters get show to the readers they're dangerous.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not "culture". It's just a trope, pretty much in any male targeted action media around the world. Women can be presented as badass but rarely actually fight like badasses (besides maybe a semi-comical punch to the face to men who question their capabilities based on their gender). Seeing women in that genre actually fight is rare, and if they do, it's often against another female character. It's just as true in Western media as it is in Japanese media.

That is really true.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I see it way more in shonen comics than I do American ones. There's no way you can claim that Sakura Haruno (pre, during, or post Shippuden) shares the same media grounds with, say.. Caiera the Oldstrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Might just be selective reading? I find that many Western action stuff rubs me even worse because they'll have "straw" female badasses so often. Ones that present that way, but only superficially. Maybe one "cool" introductory fight scene, where they fight in tight leather and high heels, then proceed to be a damsel/love interest/do nothing for the rest of the story. I can hardly think of any Western examples off the top of my head where women, especially multiple women, fight on the same level as men, with the narrative taking them just as seriously. Japanese counterpoint: Attack on Titan.

Probably, though I want to throw it out there that I'm not saying this doesn't exist in American media. I very much agree that it exists for female characters in all media and sucks, but my fandoms might just happen to have the once in a blue moon lady that goes against the trope.

I want to wait until the supposed season two of AoT comes out and concludes the story before I watch it. The animation and female characters are amazing, but I can't stand the manga's art at all.

Yeah, I just think it basically happens everywhere. I'm not saying Japan's better than America in that regard at all. Japan's not too great with issues of sexism, and the "straw" female badasses are everywhere there, too. But I could be totally off base, just going from my impression, most Japanese media tends to be more... honest? about its sexism, probably because Japan's gender roles are still so ridiculously strict. Whereas sometimes I feel like Western media gives a straw female badass to pretend they aren't sexist. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Yoruichi and Soifon come to mind, but Bleach still has major issues.

FMA has legit women characters fighting. So does D-Gray Man and Ao no Exorcist, for that matter.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
all female mangaka

that's probably why their women are legit fighters instead of *~dangerous~* eyecandy

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. And it's annoying in both. Granted, gender roles are sitll much more strict on the east (at least from what I friends tell me)

It's not culture at all. It's just sexism.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I liked Attack on Titan. At least you got to see the female characters be really badass.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I do think that is really something to be said about Attack on Titan, no matter what criticisms one may have. The female characters are basically equal to the male characters, and they all fight equally. And it's not just one token female badass, half of Eren's class were girls.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
SnK is actually a good example of how differently fandom perceives male and female characters.

Mikasa is one of the strongest humans along with Levi. I'd even say Mikasa is physically stronger while Levi Is just faster. Levi has more experience but Mikasa is younger and has a lot more room to grow. However fandom will always trashes her, treats her as a joke, or downplay her while raising Levi up as an untouchable badass. They are basically the same character except one was born male and one was born female. Yet the difference in how fandom treats them is huge.

I wish we got to see more of Mikasa and Armin away from Eren. They're so boring when they exist only to be his dedicated besties. The times in the anime that they're away from him they turn into totally amazing independent people! Early on when they thought Eren was eaten by that one Titan, Mikasa went into badass mode and pulled everyone together to get them through the attack. And later on when Armin was SURPRISE TACTICIAN was great.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Pretty much, which is why I dislike Levi so much, or rather his fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Too bad he's pretty much a cash cow at this point.

I don't think it's entirely fair to blame the fans, when Isayama himself has given Levi many more moments of badass than Mikasa. If anything, Mikasa is probably one of the worst-treated female characters. She gets very little development on her own (and I wish she would get more!)

Canonically I also wouldn't say there's any proof of how strong Mikasa is compared to Levi - she's quite strong, but she comes nowhere close to Levi's titan kill count since he's a veteran and she's not.
They're also very different in terms of personality. While your point about their treatment in fandom is valid, canon is at fault for a lot of it imo. Besides, she's probably the second most popular character after Levi (especially in Japan), at least based on merchandise... So it's not like she's getting totally shafted.

(and btw, snk stands out in part because there is more than one exceedingly capable and badass female character. And there's no fanservice either)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom trashes her? I thought she was the fandom darling. Clearly we run in different circles.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really. My second viewing of AoT made Mikasa's obsession with Eren so overpowering that it kind of negated anything cool she did. Not to mention Levi saving her butt too. Annie is good too, but still not as strong as the others.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Annie. And Sasha is the most human character I've seen in that series. My favourite is probably the lady Major, though Number Ten, whose name I've forgotten - Christine, maybe? - and her big tough friend are pretty cool, too!

Are we excusing sexism as a "cultural difference" now?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Excusing" is a stupid verb to use. It's the facts on the ground in the real world and we should deal with it on that basis. Are you saying that's not the case?
