That's funny, because part of the reason I've stuck around is it's less judgmental here than a lot of other places I've been. Not that it's free of judgment, because it is, and there's some major asshats here. But it's more pleasant here than many other forums.

Also the only real "ship war" type thing I've seen here was Makorra vs Korrasami, and that all was pretty par for the course type stuff. You get the exact same butthurt over on tumblr, except at least here, you won't have people reblogging your posts so they can tell all their followers to GO TELL THAT PERSON HOW BAD AND WRONG THEY ARE FOR LIKING THIS SHIP, and then have your ask box blown up with people calling you scum.

I definitely feel like this is a much healthier place to be than some of the other forums I've gone to. Even with the occasional shitposter (like today's...) and utterly moronic wank (some of which I find funny tbh) I feel like this is a much more welcoming space than most of the rest of the internet without being a tone police state.

Same.

There is no 'completely' safe space. Assholes are going to be everywhere because people are everywhere and a lot of people are assholes. There's no avoiding it.

But all in all, I don't feel like the ratio is that bad. There is definite unpleasantness, but I've never felt that it was worse than any other major fandom space.

And yes, there are certain issues that are more likely to cause wank than others, but as you said, I think that's pretty par for the course with fandom in general.

Sorry that you haven't been enjoying yourself OP.

And I would never, ever go off anon here, even with a username not connected to anything else.

OP

I find the anonymity here allows people to be bigger assholes (as is the case for every anon forum) but unlike something like 4chan where you expect everyone to be an asshole, here there's kind of a... veneer of civility that makes you expect more, so the blow hits harder when your expectations are not met.

I've been on f!s since the year it was first created (god I need to leave this place) and I've been in all sorts of shitstorms since then. I got on fandomwank once (back when I was a named user on LJ) for having opinions here back when FW was a thing (is that still a thing?) and frankly, I think it's gotten worse, not better, along with the SJ leanings of fandom. Everyone wants to get on their high horse for reasons both legitimate and illegitimate or somewhere in between and use SJ language as a tool to put other people down. Fuck, just a while ago I said some movie was shit and then someone has to come in and be like "how dare you I was suicidal and almost homeless and that movie saved my life" and I'm like... okay? Is that what we were talking about? Is this what it's about? We can't criticize any kind of media because it might be someone's lifeline? Is this what fandom is about now? I WISH we could go back to the days of simple ship wars.

And the whole premise of the comm is basically to sit around judging peoples' secrets. You're airing the dirty laundry every day. And I see in so many secrets... not just my own... the constant assumption of "you have this one opinion and therefore you are a terrible human being and you should die in a fire." So many people jump to the worst possible interpretation of every secret. You write a brief secret, people fill in the blanks with negative assumptions, you write a long one to clarify and they don't read it at all and judge you for things you specifically accounted for in your tl;dr.

Sorry this is sort of a rambling non-reply.
