If you could own any unusual pet, what would it be?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the tarantula thread! What unusual pet would you want? ('unusual' is relative but not a cat, dog, hamster, goldfish, etc) Think you ever might go for it, or would it realistically be a bad idea?

I don't really consider them unusual myself, but rats. I had rats as a kid and I absolutely loved them, and I would love to get them again one day. Considering they are legal and fairly easy to care for, I could definitely see myself getting them again one day. The only tough thing is the short lifespan, and losing pets is really rough for me.

I've wanted to get a rat for years but my mom is terrified of vermin-folk (and tho I am an adult now, I still live at home, so... sigh).

But any tips for the future-me-whom-possibly-maybe-owns-a-rat?

I'd like a skunk.

My family has owned (in my lifetime) tarantulas, scorpions, a gecko, an anaconda, a Burmese python (albino and regular), ball pythons, a caiman, a nile monitor, iguanas, a Quaker parrot, rats, cats, dogs, goats, chickens, guineas, pigs, a turkey, and horses.

I used to want a skunk because I love them but these days I'm against people having any species that hasn't been domesticated as a pet. Not to preach at you. Mostly I'm just agreeing "yay skunks!"

I would really love a sugar glider, but that's not gonna happen.

A fox. Will probably never happen. They're apparently difficult to domesticate and fare badly outside of the wild.

But so cute and floofly.

I'd like a pet Great Auk, but mainly because that would then mean the Great Auks were no longer extinct. Hey, guys, can we stop worrying about cloning dinosaurs and neanderthals and start on cloning the great auks, please?

A red panda.

Ferret! Not ridiculously unusual, but you get funny looks when you take them for walks.

Honestly I'm not really attracted to the idea of "unusual" pets though, especially any sort of mammal. It often runs dangerously into "wild animal" territory, or very shady breeding/distributing companies, or many people not really knowing anything about the animal they are adopting and the situation is terrible. Anyway, cats and dogs and other "typical" pets are awesome, and long bred to be pets.

A dragon. They are totally real.

I really want to have a snake or some lizards of some kind.

A crow! I bet they'd be fun pets to have, you'd just have to keep them entertained.

I'd really like to have some hermit crabs or an axolotl. Something aquarium based.

I'd draw the line at exotic pets. Nothing forced into domestication. No apes/chimps/monkeys/orangutans/etc, big cats, snakes, jungle-dwelling creature, that sort of thing. I probably wouldn't keep anything I had to keep in the house all of the time.

The "oddest" animal I might keep around might be a frog, or a donkey, but I'd either have a pond outside (not really pet owning) or I'd have some kind of farm (not likely to happen).

So yeah, I'm pretty boring.

Crow, maybe? The only issue is I'd be afraid of not keeping it entertained and providing adequate social interaction.

I want a giraffe so much. They're so cute.

I'd like a micropig, if the scam about micropigs was actually true. As it is, I don't live somewhere where a full-sized hog would be a feasible life choice.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Goats would be fun, especially milch goats, but to get milk they'd have to have kids, and I don't know if I could sell the baby billies (is that the right term?) knowing that they'd probably end up eaten. Also I think frilled lizards are awesome, but they eat smaller lizards and rodents, so I'd have a hard time feeding one without feeling like crap. If I ever got a lizard it would have to be either an iguana, which afaik are herbivorous, or an insectivore, since I'd be okay with feeding bugs to a pet. And I have to put in a word for nine year old me who still wants a horse.

A ferret or a snake.
