I catch something new every time I read it.

Is it any better than the anime? The anime was filler city.

The anime IS the manga. It's basically a shot by shot recreation. I've never seen an adaptation so faithful to the original material.

I loved it personally but I binge-watched for several days so that might have helped. I've watched the whole things 3 times.

If you didn't like the anime, you probably won't like the manga.

Anything by Urasawa really.
Caught up with Billy Bat finally; god that man can tell my any sort of story and I'll eat out of his hand.

Only one of my friends likes his narrative style though, it's so frustrating. Now I hesitate recommending him (even though he's my favorite by a long shot) because people can't get into the artwork or the themes. I want to shake their shoulders and scream MANGA HAS STORYTELLING POTENTIAL TOO! /obligatory Watchmen reference here

Fruits Basket. There was a lot of interesting things in it. and the Sohma family fascinated me with their dysfunction.

+1

I love that series.

OMG it was. It was kind of the reason I'm so fascinated with fictional dysfunctional families and exploring that in writing.

The family was fascinating. some people say Tohru was a Mary Sue, but int the manga at least she was a fascinating perfectionist mess. I dunno about you but a girl who lives in a tent so as not to trouble her family members probably has something going on.

In some ways she was actually kind of relate-able in her anxiety.

I don't even like Fruits Basket that much, but I still bought the whole series and reread bits and pieces every now and then. It's a great concept with fascinating and engaging characters.

Ranma. It is just goofy fun, and it is my comfort read. No big deal.

Dance in the Vampire Bund is my favourite comfort read. It's just got everything I love.

- Grounded supernatural
- Vampire Hong Kong
- Thriler
- Political drama
- Pretty sick fight scenes
- Tier 1 operators
- Trap werewolf
- Surprisingly nuanced critique of Japan, and explores the darker side of there xenophobia along with avoiding the requisite 'nippon stronk'.

Yumi Tamura's Basara. Post-apocalyptic fantasy shojo with a great heroine.

So many incredible characters! And so many neat little things tucked away in the background.

Love Basara! Wish I had more than 4 volumes (my country's publisher stopped translating mid-series).

Ditto. Such a great series, and it's a shame a couple of the volumes of the US release are out of print and crazy expensive.

I'd add 7 Seeds in there too. I love Yumi Tamura, I wish her works were more popular.

I keep reading Sunshine Sketch and Yotsuba to! over and over. They are so comforting and sweet! I love them.

Love Yotsuba! It's so cute. I've never heard of Sunshine Sketch. What's it about?

Re: Post that Manga you keep Re-reading

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
(Ugh, sorry for the late reply!)

Sunshine Sketch is the story of four (later, six) girls living at a dorm outside their art-centric high school. It's the same writer of Magica Madoka, but there's no fantastical element to it, it's just real life schmoopy stuff and I love it!

Skip Beat because it takes forever to update and I keep forgetting things. Also things that happened a couple of years ago irl suddenly make sense with the information we've gotten since then.

Seven Days because it's lovely, light on the typical BL tropes and one of my favourite BL manga.

Ano Kado wo Magatta Tokoro because it's also easy on the typical BL tropes and actually addresses the issue of a teacher/student relationship in a more believable way than most other manga I've seen.

One Piece because I love it.

- From Eroica With Love because it still makes me ugly cry from laughter, but not the first volumes because the mangaka didn't know what she was doing at first.
But then it got better somewhere around volumes 3 and 6. So much better omg.

Tvtropes describes the series thusly:
"Basically, it's Road Runner vs. Coyote set in Europe. And the roadrunner wants to screw the coyote." Which is pretty accurate imo. Sadly (or luckily? depending on the reader) it doesn't have any yaoi so even dudebros can stomach it.

- Strain by Yoshiyuki Okamura and Ryoichi Ikegami
Because it's beautifully drawn, and it's basically a modern version of Monte Cristo (kinda but not really) with lots and lots of violence. There's also only 5 volumes so it's a quick read.

- A Cruel God Reigns by Moto Hagio
Because it's still one of the most depressing mangas I've ever read and sometimes I wanna angst about my own childhood abuse. This series actually helped me cope better.
lb_lee: The Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, doubled over laughing. (bwa-hah-ha)

OMG EROICA. It is the most wonderful case of, "ignore the first volume" EVER. You can just see the creator trying to do a typical seventies BL and then just take off into the Cold War crack sunset, never to be seen again!

Hmm, the one I've reread the most is Death Note. Why? I just think it's amazing, and when I reread it, I still think it's amazing. I just love Light and how he evolves, and the different parts of his personality that we see. And the stuff with him and L... okay, I may be a shipper, too.
