Just stepping in to say this isn't me. I'm bored of the Based Marvel Can Do No Wrong DC Is Grimdark And Evil thing, but it's whatever, you know? I just wish Warner Brothers knew how to make a superhero movie.

You don't have to believe me, but you're wrong.

I don't use the word 'stan' and I tend to avoid overly fannish slang. And I want Civil War to be GOOD because I like these damn movies and I'm hoping it redeems the awful storyline it's based on.

na

Yeah, I'm hoping that it'll turn out alright too. I mean, they pretty much have to make some significant changes in some of the storyline's elements (partially due to character rights issues and partially due to the fact that a lot of the things that happened during Civil War wouldn't really work outside of the comics or make any sense to an audience not familiar with them). idk if it'll be a great movie, but I'm almost positive that it will be better than the comic's storyline by default. It definitely can't be worse (well, I guess it technically could but at that point they would have to be actively trying to make it a terrible movie)

The video game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was worse.

I don't mind the DC films because they're dark.

I don't like them because I feel like they sacrifice characters for ideas.

The plots of the Marvel films don't really matter -- it's the characters that I love. I think this is true for a lot of fans (and why Marvel has so much fanfiction).

With DC, I feel like they focus more on creating an idea and then using the characters as vehicles to tell that story (the latest, for example, seems to be Superman as God). But I often have a lot of issues with how they handle those ideas. Either I find them shallow or lazy or I just end up flat out disagreeing.

But I can see how people acting like Marvel is perfect and DC is awful would get annoying. I actually don't love most Marvel films. Batman Begins is better than most of them, IMO, but I'd say that one's my favorite probably because it's the most character driven (being an establishing film).

I believe that is a reference to dethtoll getting his panties in a twist when some other user called the DC movies as DC movies. because according to him they are not DC movies. It was like a week ago.

They're making childish jokes about how I got into an argument a couple weeks ago because the DC movies are not made by DC themselves, but by WB studios. It's very different from Marvel, in that the MCU is produced by Marvel Studios which is an offshoot of the parent company. But some people are very invested in ignoring facts.

What you describe is actually how DC approaches their characters in general (and this is something Grant Morrison made obvious) -- though of course the comics do it better than WB's studios because they've been doing it for longer and David Goyer doesn't work for them. DC tends to treat their characters as embodiments or representatives of ideals, bit like the Greek and Roman pantheons. (Which, again, Morrison ran with -- probably why he got so involved with the New Gods as well.) As such they don't tend to have a lot of rapidly-evolving character development, but the stories are written around their strengths. The problem with WB's movies is that they fail at this last part, instead shoehorning the characters into a plot that pushes an idea rather than shaping the idea to the character (TDK is a good example of this.)

Not sure where you get the Superman As God thing? It's much more blatant in the comics, but from what I could gather in the BvS trailer, he has his fair share of detractors.

I'd like to see David Goyer replaced as lead writer for the DCCU (assuming he hasn't already following that She-Hulk/Martian Manhunter flap.) I place most of the blame for the DCCU's problems at his feet. Too bad I can't do that for Green Lantern -- which, by the way, illustrates my point about WB not knowing how to make a superhero movie. They tried to copy the Marvel method and failed miserably.

I meant that Superman is so powerful that he's being treated as a god like figure and the new film seems to be exploring that dynamic. His detractors even call him a false god, right? (I do not stay too up to date on DC, so I hope you'll forgive my ignorance).

It's an interesting concept but I'm rather skeptical that they can pull it off since I'm not a fan of The Dark Knight and that's often considered the pinnacle of the DC (or WB) films.

Thanks for the explanation though!

That does carry over from the comics, but the big thing is that in the comics he downplays that a lot. He doesn't like being viewed as a deity, because deep down he's just a Kansas farmboy who wants to do some good in the world. This is why he's often played off against beings that are equally or even more powerful, like other Kryptonians (hi Zod) or Brainiac, etc. They have godlike power and aren't afraid to use them in godlike ways, whereas Clark just wants to save everyone.

Remains to be seen how it's covered in BeaViS -- Man of Steel didn't really touch on that topic long.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It is frustrating that DC can't get their act together. Like, that basic DC concept you describe is something that should be completely well-suited to movies, and yet alas no.

I kind of blame Chris Nolan and Zach Snyder for it as well as Goyer. Like, even though Nolan's movies were pretty decent creatively and really successful financially, I think their approaches to filmmaking as directors is really prone to taking those elements of DC to a point of caricature (and also both have their own issues with directors). And so then when you try to clumsily adopt their stuff as the house style of DC movies, you end up taking all kinds of crappy habits and weak storytelling and tonal problems on board. But because Nolan was so successful, and Snyder relatively successful, that's what ended up happening. And it works when it's Nolan (as much as I stylistically disagree with him he's a really talented director) but for anyone else not so much.

(Also I just wanted to say in passing re: all the arguments above that even though I was arguing with you a bit there's no harsh feelings on my end, just a friendly discussion as far as I'm concerned)

Yeah, I don't disagree. It's the Frank Miller effect all over again -- The Dark Knight Returns (and to a lesser extent Alan Moore's Watchmen) was super successful, but all the imitators took from it was the stupid shit and not the good bits.
