Fandom frustrations

I'm gonna vent and so can you.

Re: Fandom frustrations

I feel like everything in fandom is so clustered and concentrated now. Memes can burn out in a matter of days and the sort of culture that come with forums and individual communities within them have sort of died out. I suppose it's the inevitable result of globalization, but everything's feeling like a giant echochamber.

Yeah. I hate how everything starts and ends so quickly, and people expect you to ride the wave or sink.

NAYRT, but YES. It's actually kind of depressing, what I used to love about fandom was that unlike "RL" discussions and memes and so forth lasted forever, whereas RL tends to be very hit or miss. But then RL discovered the internet exists, and the rest is history.

Re: Fandom frustrations

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of fandom related but...sometimes there have been people whom into other areas of online writing and apply "fanfiction standards" to them.

On a writing comm that hosts both, a friend and I were talking about characters of ours and one person harassed my friend about the supposed "Mary Sue " traits in her character including things like having certain abilities and status.

Sure, those would have been a problem in a fancharacter. But my friend's character was not a fan character. They were an original fiction character and a main character.

Re: Fandom frustrations

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Original fiction and original characters can have problems with Mary Sue traits, though. I don't know if that's what was really happening with your friend's work, but it's still a legit problem writers have even if it's a fanfic term.

I know that. But a lot of the person's criticisms of the character were based on the assumption that she was a fancharacter for something.

Original Fiction Mary Sues and Fanfiction Mary Sues have a very different list of qualifications and symptoms.

A character that is a spotlight stealer in fanfiction could be a fine protagonist in original fiction. In fanfiction a big issue with OCs is that they can't take too much attention when around the canon characters. This isn't as much of a problem in completely original fic.

Mouthpiece characters and Possession Sues. Canon characters that become the author's mouthpeice and stop the story to preach are the most annoying things ever. It's just the most annoying thing when you see the story tilted in one person's favor. Or people who disagree are just obviously wrong and jealous. The character gets away with anything. Karma Houdini's are annoying enough, but a Karma Houdini we're expected to like? Ugh

As for the latter, I hate when a canon character just loses their personality in favor of becoming the author.

Okay....so I know this really annoying fandom friend who I'm growing distant from because of how she treats other people.

She's judgey as fuck with my other friends and sometimes she'll even imply that it's hypocritical of them to talk about things in fanfiction they don't like, if they continue to write something she doesn't like. People who ship/write what she doesn't like? She says they "deserve" to get made fun of for writing something "stupid" . ( "If they don't like the reaction, they shouldn't have posted it"). She celebrates when people she doesn't like get hate.

I've tried to talk to her about this but she just gets mad at me for not being on her "side". I'm getting to the point where I don't even want to let them near my other friends. She'll just treat them like crap and they'll have completely valid reasons to be mad at me if I defend her. I would be mad at me if I were them.

Worst of all? It's NEVER her fault. She's my age and she's becoming an immature jerk.

I don't blame you for distancing yourself. She sounds really unpleasant to be around.

People getting so attached to their headcanon that they won't even call it a headcanon, and then they get mad later when canon goes against it. Especially when they get mad because canon is perpetuating harmful beliefs about whatever you've headcanoned a character as. If a character who's a lesbian in your headcanon falls in love with a man, no, you don't get to be mad at the writers for "enforcing the idea that lesbians really just need to find the right man," because she was never canonically a lesbian and you need to accept that.

Re: Fandom frustrations

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a person in my fandom who headcanons the female lead as asexual. In canon she doesn't wind up with anyone, but she's shown being attracted to men. But whatever, if you want her to be asexual when you think about her or write her, then that's cool. But this girl is starting to get pissed whenever anyone else in fandom puts the character in a sexual relationship, being all "erasure" and "she wouldn't do any of that! She isn't interested in sex!" It's really, really annoying.

Well, I just got like 3 messages on here from analanon trying to drag me into some drama on here. That is a bit annoying because I have no idea to block people on dreamwidth. -__-

I only use DW for F!S so my knowledge of how to use beyond posting on it is limited.

"Dirk Strider is a confirmed abuser and if you disagree then you're an abuse apologist".

Actually the whole "Dirk Strider is an abuser" crap I see on tumblr. And I guess I find it a bit ironic how little self-aware they are with their bullying people until they agree with their brand of "canon". "We're not manipulative bullies, we're just trying to tell you how to think and being really condescending about it!" Yes. Of course.

Also I absolutely hate that everyone and everything in fandom has to be neatly tagged and pigeon-holed into certain tags, with no room for interpretation. If character is X then character is X and any other interpretation is wrong.

And I forgot the thing where something is tagged with something like non-con, and then there's 9000 comments complaining about the non-con. Like yes, thank you for pointing it out Captain Obvious.

Dear person on the forums.

No-one goes on your server because it is never fucking up.

Everyone moved to different servers because it is never fucking up.

No-one forced you to move to the server we're all in, stop complaining it is up 24/7 and put your stupid pets somewhere safe if you don't want them to die. Stop putting them on passive, there's half your problem if they're not defending themselves. You have fucking 4 rexs, they can handle themselves.

and stop being such a control freak over when people are on, what they do with their base and pets.

and stop with the PA shit.

I feel like canon has left me behind. The first couple of seasons gave us a vast, mysterious world, and each new scrap of information was fanfic fodder. Now my first reaction to new episodes is "Well, another of my ideas just got proven non-canon." I'd love to jump ship, because there are other series I like way more, but I don't know what other setting I could go to with such a vast world to work with. (Dark Souls, maybe? It feels like the only kind of fic you could write about that setting would be angst fic.)

Looking for crossover fic on AO3 is the fucking worst if you're not drilling down to a crossover between two specific fandoms (and even if you are, it's still pretty bad because of the 'three million drabbles in one fic' school of posting)

It is actively awful and it really does not need to be

gah

I am a huge fan of a TV show that got cancelled a few years ago, and, in particular, the main character of that show and the actor who portrayed this character. This was probably very naive of me but I hoped the fandom would carry on with fics, art, etc. even after the show went off (well, it happened with Star Trek!) but it hasn't happened. i miss the fandom more than I miss the actual show. I still have a big crush on the actor but he's not doing much lately.

Dear ex-fandom friend who is still kind of in the fandom:

Do you not realize that saying 'Oh everyone should be able to draw/write about what they want without being made fun of/judged' and then turning around and telling an artist that 'What you drew looks like it's rape-y and it's making sex into punishment' makes you look extremely hypocritical?

Just saying.
