Wahh. I was into Captain America before he was famous.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
don't forget zombie!Cap. that dude was creepy (more so than the other zombies)

As someone who only got into the Cap fandom because of the movies, I totally get where you're coming from OP.

Liking something when it's unpopular is so very different than when it's popular and mainstream.

Just from my experience, unpopular things often leave you on the defensive, with people insulting your intelligence or your taste constantly. So if you were a fan before it was popular, I do think there's a tendency to see yourself as being a "true" fan rather than a fair weather fan. That's a pretty understandable reaction as far as I'm concerned as long as you're not a dick to other fans.

seconded.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
YOU GET ME.

Back during the 90s, when Grim n' Gritty was the style, I would get actually mocked for liking a dorky, outdated, unrealistic character like Cap. So certainly I'd never make fun of someone else for liking a good version of a character I like (I reserve the right to look down on fans of Ultimate Cap) but I occasionally feel like I've paid my fandom dues in a way they haven't. Which is totally unfair, I know, but... yeah.

I actually *just* read the Capwolf story arc (it's collected in a trade) and I recommend it! It's got a whole village of werewolves, and Wolverine is a main character, and it's just all around fun. Also, in the interior art, Cap is a surprisingly cute werewolf, and his internal wolf-monologues are hilarious. ("This disc! Shiny! Mine!")

That's kinda how I feel about animated Young Justice. Like, yay it's a thing...now give some fucking TPBs of the original comic run so that I don't have to get them in bits and pieces at exorbitant prices.

Nobody is s poser for liking a version of Cap thst is different from the one you first started liking. They're just fans of a specific thing.

As someone who's favorite characters are Bruce Banner, Hawkguy, and Black Widow, and had to sit though and read the entire Ultimate series, I kinda understand your pain.

I think every comic character at some point has been horrendously horribly written and/or drawn.

I get that, and that's cool, just don't be a PITA towards the young and loudmouthed who might not get what you understand about the character, and it's all good.

Also, while TPTB were drawing on comic Cap to make him in the MCU, that really is a separate and new character, and comic backstory/comparisons aren't always relevant.

I think a lot of people can relate to this via one thing or another. Like I know there's a lot of people who like Deus Ex, but they got into it through Human Revolution and haven't played the older games. I love Human Revolution, don't get me wrong, and I'm so excited for Mankind Divided I could shit. It's a wonderful series, and I'm so glad a new generation is discovering it (especially now that the new game's in the works) but consider yourselves lucky y'all didn't have to suffer through THIS:

As sequels to beloved games go this one was particularly shitty, and ended up killing the franchise for nearly a decade and contributing to the collapse of the development studio.

(I'm using this an excuse to post this gif. God, is he gorgeous. Look at that jawline... look at those eyelashes.)

Honestly, what I like is MCU Cap. I don't claim to be the biggest fan of the comic version, simply because I haven't read much of it. (I have read a bit, but not enough to say I know him all that intimately.)

So I imagine you do know and love Steve more than me...at least the comic version. The MCU version is not the same thing, but even if you know and love that version better too that is okay. It is not a contest.

I'll gladly admit I'm a newbie...but posers? I mean, people are bound to enter fandoms at different times.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, I love comic Cap too. I was more into other Marvel books, but my best friend bought a lot of Captain America, and Cap was a lot cooler than people realized.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you're not openly an ass about it, OP, I don't think there's any shame in that sentiment. Of course, fans can be fans however they like, but I think everyone is a old fandom coot about some things sometimes.

Cap was my first hero crush when I was, like... 10? I think around ten. From the 90s Spider-Man cartoon of all things. But, man, I have had no shame in avoiding runs where he's written or drawn in a way I dislike, and that makes for a lot of material that I haven't read.

VIVA LA NO SHAME!!!

Also seconding how kind of awesome CapWolf looks and I'm not even a Cap fan/follower.

I love movie Cap and I get where you're coming from anon cause I can sorta get like that with other adaptations/franchises...

But man, I feel awful because I find comics!Cap unbelievably boring. I read all of Brubaker's run a good 3/4 years ago and I could just not get into comics!Steve. Granted he spent a good portion of the run dead and the primary focus was Bucky, but when he came back I was just still so blah on him. It's probably not Steve's best run or anything, but I just... can't get into him.

I feel like MCU does capture what makes Steve Steve, but I dunno for me it only translates to screen, and it's not like Chris Evans is an astounding actor or anything but I feel like maybe he gives him some charm.

I totally understand you, OP.

At the first Comic Con after the first Thor movie came out, my friend and I overheard some teenaged girls digging through the comics bins for Loki issues and exclaiming over, like, really stupid things... and yeah. I wanted to shake my (non-existent) cane at them and tell them to get off my lawn.

I mean, DUDE. I frickin' own the novels from the 90's AND I totally watched the Hulk/Thor crossover movie from the 80's all the time! (Fuck the stupid Syfy channel, I miss when it was good and was spelled correctly.)
