* OP *

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
My fics don't get flames. I get the anon hate on Tumblr. The hate usually consists of "X isn't autistic, stop pretending they are!" or "Why are you making Y retarded?"

I just delete it. I get boggled because I have a deaf headcanon and a blind headcanon and a mental illness headcanon and I don't get any hate for those. It's just the autistic one. That's what confuses me. The hate itself doesn't bother me.

OP again, I forgot to add those are the NICEST messages. Others call me names and tell me to kill myself. It's pretty amusing but at the same time sad.

OP, my sympathies. I truly don't understand why anyone would feel the need to do that, and no one deserves that kind of abuse.

Ugh, sorry people are being such assholes. With that kind of language I can only guess they are trolls, especially since they are anon, so deleting them is the definitely the best way to go.

Sounds like it's an acceptability thing. Physical disabilities and mental illness have been accepted; autism has not.

And, come to think of it, that's true. I don't think I've ever seen "you're deaf" used as an insult, but I've seen "you're autistic/an autist" used plenty.

I think it might be plain old run-of-the-mill prejudice, unfortunately. :-/

OP, the problem isn't that you "can't view it from a neurotypical or allistic POV", the problem is that you can't view it from a *trolls* POV.

Trolls are a mystery to the non-trolltypical.

*hug* I have autism too and I can feel you. Some of the extreme ones are probably trolls.

Maybe it's from all the fandom debates where people insist that X is unambiguously autistic in canon, and also from the number of internet denizens who say they are different and special and please excuse their bad behaviour because they think they've got undiagnosed autism. It is NOT okay AT ALL to have someone give you hate for it, just trying to think of whether they might be full of bile for having been involved in previous debates.

It might also be that, for example, Capaldi Twelve can be said to be definitely not deaf, blind or obviously mentally ill in canon, but it's a bit more open to interpretation as to whether he's autistic :) and that's threatening to some people.

Idk, but I'm sorry you get anon hate from ridiculous people :(

Tangent question, but how do you have a "headcanon" for a character being deaf or blind? Isn't that it an obvious canon trait when someone can or can't see/hear?

Re: * OP * OP answering

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh, that's because they're in Transformers. One is a character who wears a visor(I headcanon that there's no optics underneath) and the other has a helm that covers where his audios are(I headcanon that they were melted and the helm hides that.) You'd think they could just "fix" it but it's not so simple. They're in an ableist society that looks down on anyone who is flawed.

All actual canon to the contrary.

Re: * OP * OP answering

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's why it's a "headcanon" anon.

Headcanon is when you fill in a gap with something you imagined, not when you contradict actual canon.

DA

It's not required to be that way. Besides, what if you get jossed? Throw out everything you imagined just because it isn't canon?

...no, but you do stop calling it "headcanon," and start thinking of it as an AU that you happen to like.

/knows nothing of Transformers canon, can't comment on those specific characters

No it isn't. I have a headcanon where Andtraste was a Silmaril. How is that filling in gaps? There are no gaps in Dragon Age that need to be filled by a shiny stone from LotR, but I do it anyway.

A headcanon can be as simple as an AU idea that is your pet favourite and most dominant personal version of the plot.
