I... I... well it's a bit hard to admit, but I guess I am anon.

On a university seminar to Turkey, I, sort of, well, smuggled a fresh pomegranate back into the USA and denied having any fresh fruits.

They were just so delicious and I, I don't know!

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-07-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
eh? You can't bring freash fruit with you into the US, is it a law?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but there's a lot of laws and regulations about bringing produce and other agricultural products into the US. it's not that you can't bring them, but you can't just bring them in, like, your luggage or whatever - they have to be inspected or licensed or something. there's a whole process.

it's generally to prevent the spread of invasive species, diseases, fungi, parasites, things like that. if you ever visit the US, there's usually a whole section about it on the customs form.

Huh. It makes sense if someone plans to plant something. Otherwise, I'm not sure I understand why fungi and such is a problem - if one just eats the produce. There were some cses of something happening I guess.

I think a lot of it is better safe than sorry.

And I think it's also the kind of thing where... you're a lot less likely to be dinged for something like OP where it's almost certainly not a problem, but it's good to have the rules and strictures around it for slightly larger cases.

Good point, sound reasoning!
Though If I were to be caught I'd hate this law, I imagine.)

Fungi spread very easily. They're why we might lose the banana.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-07-31 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Banana is fungi resistant because it has a natural wrapping, namely peel. It's very clean. I haven't once seen any fungi on it like you can find on berries or tomatoes... Ehh, what were we talking about again? Castoms?)

ayrt

You can't, no. I'm not sure if there are ways to get 'em through legally, I suppose it's likely. But I think it's things like disease/parasites that they don't want.

Once, when driving through the border back into the US from Canada, they confiscated out bananas. Did I mention it was freaking Canada?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-07-29 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps they were hungry. But yeah, as if bananas don't come from the same places to both Canada and the US.

Australia and New Zealand are waaaay more strict than that. They'll fine you for having an apple. And in fact will go through all your packaged food looking at the ingredients. Wooden items are inspected closely. You can't bring in necklaces made of certain seed species even.

Bananas are notorious for having diseases, they've wiped out whole areas of industry in Australia, and farmers have had to wait a decade to start again. They even pulled down my healthy backyard banana as a preventative quarantine enforcement, lol.

And don't forget hidden pests and non native spider in the banana cases/IN THE BANANAS. Then they go rampant and kill everything. So. Yeah. Don't. You'll deserve the fine >_>

Does it mean you are now obligated to marry the president of Turkey and spend the winter months there?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Obviously it's because you were starved and beaten as a child and now have a compulsive need to eat because food is love. Poor baby!
