Doctor woes?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Any complaints, rants, or general comments about any clinic you might go to?

Mine is kind of awkward. I'm American and living in the UK, and from America, I have a prescription sleep aid (after many years of struggling off and on with insomnia, and having no luck with "natural" aids like chamomile or the other non-prescription stuff you can get at any pharmacy). I'm getting low, so went to the doctor in the UK for the first time to talk about options. Turns out, they don't prescribe sleep aids here in 99.9% of circumstances, they prefer to send you to cognitive therapy or whatever. My doctor doesn't want to renew it, and couldn't resist a comment about Americans being overmedicated.

Now, I wasn't really interested in that debate, and I'm sure he has a point when he says in the US pills are usually prescribed sooner than they might be in the UK. But that doesn't stop me from being anxious about running out of mine. (what I take is also a mild anti-anxiety pill) I'm not too keen about doing the therapy or whatever either, I already know what my sleep anxiety issues are and how I'm supposed to cope with them. I don't have to take my sleep aid every night but I think I feel more secure knowing I have it. Maybe he's right and I shouldn't be on it, it's just disconcerting to have it taken away from me. I guess I should've considered that before, I just figured since it was prescription in the US it'd be a similar system here.

Zopiclone? It isn't good to be on that for too long, so I can understand them reviewing it. That and Diazepam are considered bad news by a lot of doctors, and they like to try and address the source rather than just treat the symptoms. I know it is scary, but it is actually one of the upsides of having a health service that isn't in hock to the pharma industry. I know it doesn't help you that much right now, but it could be good for you long term. The snarky remark was not on though, that is just poor taste.

I'm not on either of those, my original doctor recommended the one I do take because it's supposed to not be addictive like many of the others. I think it's more like, I'd like to have it available to me as a crutch, it helps my anxiety a lot to know that even if I don't take it, I still have the option so don't need to freak myself out about what will happen if I don't sleep. idk, it just seems like it relies on whatever insomnia therapy they have actually working for me, and if it doesn't, I'm basically out of luck. But yeah, I never wanted to be on the medication for forever so I guess it's as good of time as any to see how I do without it.

Is there any way you can get indica cannabis edibles? This has been the only thing to help me with my insomnia (I take a 25-30 mg dose).

Yes, suddenly not having access to medication, hilarious. what a sheep of evil Big Pharma.

If it's not the healthcare you need, then the fact that it's free doesn't make up for that.

yay for not paying anything to not actually be given anything. 10/10, NHS.

My sympathies, I hope you can find a sympathetic doctor or other solution.

I'm in Australia and have had difficulty accessing sleeping pills from doctors. I've had to really "shop" around, try them for other issues first, avoid low income areas (!!), bring in my old box with one or two left (to show I'm not a desperate addict), talk eloquently and responsibly about how I really don't want to form a dependency and I'm so careful to take a half 2-3 times a week, am also getting therapy, have tried herbs, blah blah the spiel.

I used to go across to Asia quite a bit on cheap backpacking trips and was able to stockpile benzos from Laos, melatonin from Singapore, etc... but not suggesting that as a solution!!!

These days my insomnia is quite a bit better, but also I was able to switch to doxylamine successfully, which is available over the counter here and not addictive and in my case very little tolerance formed.

oh man.

I don't know what I'd do if a doc refused to prescribe my meds. I actually tried (very slowly and under doctor's supervision) tapering off of them a few months ago and the result was disastrous. I had physical withdrawal symptoms as well as basically reverting to being a mental basketcase.

I'd love to have a time where I can come off them completely, but that time is not now.

Of course, if I knew I could afford therapy (right now I don't think I can) that would help a lot. But I don't think it'd be a complete solution.

that sucks. Eh... drink lots of camomile tea and get some anti anxiety meds?

Oh god that really sucks. I have a similar problem. I really need sleep medication, especially as a crutch just in case, but I'm running out. I'm worried I won't be able to get a prescription for more because most of the doctors I've been to have been very hesitant about it.

If you go to the same doctor who initially prescribed it, that's good though, right? I doubt they would just suddenly make you stop, that doesn't seem like great medical practice. They might start lessening your dosage and encourage you to try not taking it every night, I think. Just suddenly stopping the prescription completely (unless new medical research has proven a certain medication is dangerous or something) just doesn't seem like something they'd do. But I could be wrong.
