...ok?

I mean, aren't there characters who went through shit as bad as he did, and yet didn't turn out like him?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters that were unwittingly fed the remains of their siblings?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I said "as bad" not the exact same thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Abigail was unwittingly fed the remains of a NUMBER of girls, was drugged, manipulated, convinced she was evil and tainted, unwittingly fed MORE people, threatened, and then had her ear cut off so that Hannibal could shove it down Will's throat to frame him for her murder. And that's all BEFORE I stopped watching, which was like two seasons ago.

I'ma go with "yeah just as bad".

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Abigail was unwittingly fed the remains of a NUMBER of girls

Girls she didn't care about and girls she helped her father scope out to kill.

Not the same as what Hannibal went through.

Nah. What happened to him was undeniably traumatic, but it doesn't really excuse torturing, killing and eating other people. Though I'll bet that there are many fans who agree with you simply because they find him hot, which is both gross and all too typical in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not another male villain/abuser who some fan(girl, usually) is tempted to woobify because he had a hard past. Poor baby leave him alone!

But whatever, it's fandom, so have fun I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh please, look at Gone Girl. Female villains are woobified all the time, there's just less of them.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Opinions like this are why I find it difficult to take Hannibal fans seriously. The woobifying is unreal.

Well, you don't have to hate him. Liking or loving a character doesn't mean you approve of anything they do, no matter how many people screech at you that it does. He's a horrible person that I love horribly, lol.

I'm not really familiar with this show, but I don't think you need to hate a villain to see them as the villain. Some people have to be stopped in one way or another, even if they're in pain and need someone to help them.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I went through a phase where I thought similar things after reading Hannibal and Hannibal Rising back to back.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Mao went through difficulties in his childhood too :,(

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Why are fangirls so embarrassing?

Give a monstrous cannibal/rapist/serial killer/mass murderer a tragic past, instant woobie!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate Hannibal. But only because there's not enough that's human in him for me to hate him. I simply regard him as a walking malignancy that will pervade, corrupt, and disassemble every life he enters until he is stopped. I believe he does what he does because he's wired to find pleasure and beauty in making other people feel horrified to the very depths of their psyches.

What was done to him, and may or may not have influenced the person he became, is irrelevant. If we could "fix" him (i.e. rewire his ideation and restore his empathy) that would be different. Then I'd have to think about the person he might be if he weren't this relentless, malignant entity. But we have yet to develop any psychological or neurological techniques for "curing" psychopathy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
He tortures, kills, and eats people. He TORTURES people. He KILLS people. And he EATS people.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
But he's good looking so it's okay! If he were ugly, then yeah, murder and cannibalism would be totally not cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's more to do with him being one half of people's OTP. People will do a lot of mental contortions to believe that their OTP are great together. Which in Hannibal's case means finding a way to see him as something other than a human monster to his core.

Looks certainly don't hurt his case though.

["equally bad" anon from thread above]

Yeah, his obsession with attempting to drag the innocent into participating in his atrocities/taking on guilt for them and/or his thing about tainting people is extremely offputting.

I appreciated Hannibal without ever thinking about his sister, the way I would appreciate a lion or any other predator.
