what a fucking weird comparison

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Why because it's a real person? That's the most important comparison you can get out of fiction.

i responded to someone else down below but it's weird to me because there's no similarity between them except the fact of them having bullied someone, and that's a really broad category

it just feels really broad

and also obviously it's a charged comparison

James is supposed to be like Someone you know at school. Romney is someone you may have known at school. And the comparison is about actions, we can see a wide raing of people in that group.

but the comparison is specifically saying "I think if James had survived he would have been the kind of person Mitt Romney is"

That's a very specific thing. It's not trying to think about a wide range of people.

...some people just can't use general ideas?...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's super tenuous though. You could pick literally anyone who "you may have known at school" and say "James would have been like Bob Saget when he grew up because they both were someone you may have known at school."

Or you could pick anyone who bullied other kids. I could say "James would have been like That Girl Who was Mean to Me in Jr High when he grew up because they both bullied people."

It's way too broad for it to be a meaningful comparison in any way.
