Re: What's wrong

I hate when something bad happens here and people in other parts of the world just use it as excuse to shit on America. I'm tired of people shitting on America. Not saying we're perfect or anything close, but it's really depressing to have everyone on the internet tell me what a horrible person I am just for where I was born and the fact that I don't hate it.

America is a hive of problems, but yeah, non-Americans jumping to yell about how much America sucks as, like, a knee-jerk response is not at all productive.

I want to say something about it but I'm scared because I'm American so of course I'm sheeple and don't get it. Then I read what some other Americans are saying and it feels easier to join the shitting.

I hardly lived in the US jfc

Which would also be a reason I can't credibly say hey that is some over-the-top shitting you're doing

Why do you think "America is dysfunctional compared to most Western countries" = YOU are a horrible person? I mean, cool it with the persecution complex.

DA

"what a horrible person I am just for where I was born and the fact that I don't hate it"

I assume they mean ad hominem attacks and people insisting they're not disowning America loudly enough.

If they mean any discussion of America's problems, then yeah.

ayrt Oh well if anyone's insisting you have to hate your country (are they?) or you automatically suck (have they?) then that's just stupid.

The US-centrism and freedom murica pride talk all over the net can be pretty hard to stomach for non-Americans, when the country acts so imperialist, is so culturally pervasive, yet cannot even do basic looking out for its citizens. It's very hard not to have strong opinions about it as a country.

"laughing so hard at you stupid fucking americans" is not what i would call dispassionate policy analysis tbh

Re: What's wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
There was a comment about America AS A COUNTRY not individuals ie YOU that was nonetheless a bit on the nose in tone.

Re: What's wrong

I think perhaps the problem is this is one of those situations where everyone is very specifically seeing things from their own perspectives.

It might be the case that, on the one hand, the non-Americans see all the American patriotism and think Americans in general are unaware of the problems with their country and are just pompous arrogant asses spouting off hyper-patriotism constantly, and so they respond in that light.

Contrariwise, the Americans - or at least some of the Americans - are painfully aware of the problems of the government and the society, and so see the non-American reaction as a bunch of pretentious people choosing to look down their noses from their superior perches and have a good laugh at the expense of the poor unfortunates who still have to deal with racism and poverty and gun violence.

So it's one of those things perhaps where each thinks the other is looking down on them.

ayrt I'd quibble a bit but I can't be arsed, in general I think those are very good points, thankyou!

Re: What's wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
America as a country is made up of individual Americans. When you shit o the country as a whole, you shit on its individuals, too.

Re: What's wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh PLEASE, what sort of paranoid attitude is it that when you see someone criticise a country's policies, you think it means they mean each and every citizen is fucked?

I can criticise the HELL out of my own country, this doesn't mean I think I'm a bad person LOL

Re: What's wrong

It's lash back because you (the general you) are all about how amazing and free America is and it doesn't matter how much it's said, the actions and news articles paint a different picture. Added to all the Americans constantly weighing in (on non American fandoms, in fandom circles) and there's just a general constant irritation at American presence where it's not wanted or as good as it acts.

This gung-ho American "you" is nobody in this corner of the internet, though. There is no point in posting on Fandom Secrets about what's wrong with America. We know it already, better than you do because we live it. You're not taking anyone here down a peg, you're just rubbing in what hurts for us. Go to a right-wing forum and talk your talk there.

You didn't read my comment at all, did you?

Here's a third reason tacked on: idiotic defensive Americans not reading comments and applying American culture to other people.

They like having someone to shit on that they won't get called bigots for because Americans are "privileged" (never mind that they shit on us for what boils down to being treated like shit by the leaders of our own country. We're unfortunate individuals when it's convenient for the narrative, and privileged members of the US Borg when it's convenient). It's like Tumblr shitting on white, straight, cis men, really.
