TVtropes is awesome, they have everything. Imho, OC stand ins are cooler than plain OCs because they are more difficult to write.

Yeah, with an OC Stand-In, you have to fit them into what small amount of canon exists for them. Sometimes "small" is a relative term too, for example, I have RP'd the Silmarils and at least a couple of Valar. Short on characterisation, but still pretty big on presence.

Exactly!
Valar are like gods in Silmarillion is all I know.) Tolkien had so many characters, some of them are only mentioned by name... The one time I tried to RP, it was Withnail and I, and I had to pick a minor character, couldn't choose though.

Yeah, intermediate gods or archangels. They get some explanation for what element they rule over, but barring the tale of Aulë making the dwarves, they don't have huge reams of characterisation.

But I like working with little characterisation, as I can play my pet character types. One of the more stressful RP characters (and very rewarding too) is Boromir, because he does have background, both from LotR canon and from the fanfic that inspired me to RP him.
