Re: Myers-Briggs test

Yes, only the most respected personality index. Clearly very stupid.

The results are meant to describe personality on a very general level, not give you some horoscope-esque rundown of traits that could fit any individual.

That said, I have taken it three times now and it has quite accurately kept pace with my changing stance on the importance social and emotional intelligence, so I'd say it's fairly accurate.

Yeah... it is very stupid, and no, it isn't the most respected personality index by a LONG SHOT. It's been criticized for a very long time by agencies actually concerned with psychology. Testing for its validity has generally yielded poor results, and it's been criticized for not having any sort of "lie detector" built in it - questions designed to catch people who tend to exaggerate or pick socially desirable qualities. Myers-Briggs basically has almost no credibility these days.

It's the MMPI that's widely used and more respected by actual psychologists, not Myers-Briggs.

Plus, it wasn't even developed by actual psychologists. And the psychology field does NOT use it. It's not much more accurate than your horoscope - feel good nonsense that anyone can interpret as pertaining specifically to themselves if they are motivated enough.

It is used by businesses to asses "good fits" with employees, yes. But no one really knows why it's still used when it's so widely criticized and no one really has anything good to say about its results.

The MMPI is new, and while it's used often I wouldn't call it the most respected, just the best for research purposes as it is much easier to perform statistics tests with. Myers-Briggs was essentially the reason other personality indexes even exist, so yeah, I'd say the level of respect is up there.

I never said it was the most accurate or comprehensive personality index out ther... to use an analogy, the same can be said for traditional IQ testing vs. newer versions of the IQ test. What I am saying is that the Myers-Briggs index is still the IQ test of personality; it's the most well known outside of psych circles and most widely used outside of research.

By that logic, we should say Freudian dream interpretation is "the most respected" because it's used in "What does your dream mean?" quizzes on the Internet and pop magazines. Well-known doesn't mean respected, widely-used doesn't mean respected, especially when its popularity is outside of the actual field it is supposed to represent. I mean hell, by that logic, the zodiac is widely-respected and useful as well, after all, people have been believing that for thousands of years.

If you agree, then I'm confused as to why you snidely dismissed OP's claim that it was stupid (which, psychologists say, it is) and said it was the most respected personality index, though now you're saying it isn't.
