that's kind of silly, but I totally do the same thing. sometimes when I see big bang fics with super ugly art at the beginning, it kind of puts me off of the fic. not usually enough for me to refuse to give the fic a try, but it does kind of ruin the first impression a bit. I know that's unfair because the art in no way reflects the quality of the fic (I mean, I've seen big bang fics that are kind of shitty get really gorgeous art) and that the author kind of has to include the art to be polite even if they themselves don't like it, but I can't help having a knee jerk reaction

In general, I prefer Big Bang art and the fic it illustrates to be kept separate for this reason. It's very hard to forget bad art, especially if it's of the characters.

I don't think the writer has to include the art in the fic. Often it's just linked to, especially on AO3. That's fine.

When both art and fic are good and suit each other, it's fantastic. Each becomes even better by association. Pretty rare though.

Luckily my last Big Bang involved posting the fanart and fanfic separately. And thank God, because not only did I get a mediocre artist, but they chose to illustrate a major plot spoiler :-(

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, plot spoilers are not good.

Maybe they meant for their art to be linked to at the end of the fic? I've seen that a lot.

I'm chortling at the choice of background for this secret OP. ;-)

I still laugh whenever I see that picture.

Mte.

Me too! And apparently they didn't cover it up because it drew tourists.

Hilarious background choice, OP.

I don't think bad art could stop me from reading a fic though (since the fic and the art itself are two entirely different things, often by different people), but rarely do I see art paired with fic anyway. It hasn't ever been an issue. (I've seen a few...unimpressive banners, but nothing that threw me off this much.)

Maybe you'll be able to overcome it? If not it isn't the end of the world, but you might be missing out on something good!

(Thanks for reminding me that Kingsman Big Bang is coming up. BRING ON THE FIC!)

I kind of want to guess what Fandom/Fest this is, simply because I've seen fest notices for one of my fandoms floating around recently and the art makes me cringe.

Lemme just ask this: is it an MPREG fest by any chance?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
oh man, nothing makes me cringe more than mpreg photo manips

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
The one I have in mind isn't a photo manip, it's just very... unfortunate art.

But I totally agree with you. MPREG manips are horrifying. I was scrolling my dash on my phone the other day and saw the start of a semi-decent looking manip of two male characters in bed. Then I kept scrolling as the image loaded... and pregnant belly. Eughhh.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Photo manips in general have so much potential to be totally horrific.

Am I wrong, or does there seem to be a growing trend for photo manips at the moment, especially to advertise fests or to accompany big bang art? It's like they outnumber other art by some margin right now in that quarter.

op

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, just a normal fest with really ugly banner art. Like, the artist tried for realistic and it... just doesn't look good.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
So metimes it can be better just to have a plain background for a banner with a simple, easy to read font on top.

If it helps: If you're using AdBlocker, you can block pictures as well - might save you the scrolling.

And icons that annoy you, animated gifs. I love Adblock!

Ugh, yeah. It sounds mean, but I hate bad fanart.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All good fanartists started off as bad ones first.

Heh, as petty as it sounds, I feel the same way. Sometimes I just get second hand embarrassment. Even if it's for something I like I won't promote/reblog it if it looks ugly.

I dunno, I guess I feel like if it is representing the fandom it should at least look nice.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Also I feel like fandom art depicting real people is, more often than not, cringeworthy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, drawing real people realistically is hard and cartoonifying or making them look like your hot anime yaois leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I know I sound like a terrible person but I really hate bad art. It makes me feel embarrassed for the artist if they don't realize it. I enjoy art enough to know that there are different styles but some stuff just looks bad and that's it.

One time I saw some pencil drawing of a character bust and the neck was as long as a giraffe and he had these beady eyes that didn't even have any pupils. The artist was proud enough to make it their icon too. Maybe they saw something in it that no other person could see. Heh.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's silly, OP. But I'm doing the same thing with one of my fandoms and a banner that is not just kinda ugly but has typos.
