Anyone who says she has no personality has missed the point so hard I'd question whether they've even watched the show beyond the first three episodes.

Yes, exactly.

With how fucked up she is, whenever I watch this series, I keep asking myself if it's really her action or not every time she does something. But no, there's a lot there that's really her and she definitely has a personality (and not a super nice one, at that, but definitely an interesting one).

Hey, no no you listen here, Anthy is awesome and don't let anyone tell you otherwise OP.
As an abuse victim myself, so I relate to Anthy a lot.
I love how the show actually protrays her as bitter and clearly angry for what's happened to
her, and actually has trouble opening up and trusting people. She dosent just get over it smiling and move on. The show can sometimes be too subtle for its own good so it's easy to miss her characterization, but I think she's still a very well written and deep character.

I'm so happy about all these Utena secrets.

Anthy definitely has a personality. She's like the Sansa Stark of the show, making herself malleable and unreadable, while watching and learning the weaknesses of those around her to undermine them.

She's also kind of like the combined repository of all the other characters' personalities, insecurities, manias, etc.

I wonder if it's the same person posting all the Utena secrets? Anyway, the-I-want-to-fuck-my-brother thing skeeved me out a bit.

Nope. I made some of the other Utena secrets in this batch, but not this one. So including me, there's at least two people making Utena secrets. Possibly more.

Also, I'm pretty sure the I-want-to-fuck-my-brother thing is supposed to skeeve you out.

Was he? I thought it was deliberately left ambiguous. He was clearly abusing her in other ways, but the show never comes down and says that it's for sure rape, though it certainly could be interpreted that way (just like everything else in Utena, ambiguous as hell)

I'd call it about as certain as Miki and Kaoru having a sexual relationship or Utena and Anthy being a couple in the romantic sense (outside of the movie, of course).

In the show, it clearly shows him forcing her to undress and using her her when she's clearly not comfortable with it.

I don't think it was meant to be ambiguous. Akio is the one who initiates sex with Anthy by grabbing her. After they have sex Anthy speaks to Akio in a flat voice and you can't see her eyes. Since Akio is meant to be Anthy's abuser, how else are you supposed to represent it? Jeez.

All of these Utena secrets are making me want to watch this. I have a friend who told me all about it over a decade ago, but I've never gotten around to it...

Do it! It's trippy, but it's fantastic.

on topic, Utena was one of those shows where I knew a group of devoted fans who'd occasionally tell me to check out a scene or two if they were watching, but I've yet to really watch it. It always seemed so very ott and larger than life that I feel like I'd have to be in a certain frame of mind to even want to start, but it also seems like it's good (pacing-wise, at least) for a binge watch.

I did that once. Marathon'd it. 39 episodes à 20 minutes. That's 13 hours of Utena. Sadly, the people watching with me fell asleep around episode 34 and completely WTFed out when they came to somewhere in episode 38. For me, it was great, but for a first time viewer I'd not reccomend a marathon. Maybe a weekend of 4-5 hour sessions...

She has personality all right. It's just not the poor, innocent victim personality that many in the fandom tend to think she has. But I learned many years ago that it's better to let people believe what they want about Anthy instead of showing them bothersome things like facts.

That's what I've learned about a lot of characters :P

I am not in the fandom, but do people really think she's a poor innocent victim? O_O I mean in the first few episodes I didn't twig much onto what was going on with her, but by the end it's pretty clear that innocent she isn't...

I love Anthy's character from the show, but weirdly I also love her character in Adolescence, even though they are almost completely different people.
